BMW Tries To Catch Mercedes By Putting M Badges On Almost Everything
Though it has only been on the market for four years, the F80 generation BMW M3 is already going out of production. In its place will be the 2019 M3, codenamed the G80. The new M3 will kickstart a major expansion of the M Division, which is said to include 26 new models. Autocar reports the expansion will be spearheaded by BMW M chief Frank van Meel, who was poached from Audi Sport (formerly Quattro GmbH). The goal of the expansion is to match Mercedes-AMG with M Performance and M sales of over 100,000 units per year.

Just as AMG is now pretty pointless for impact so will M at BMW become. Both are just trim levels that both manufacturers want you to think come from a totally separate division of super-engineers. BS!

Yes - indeed.

The idea behind these cars was exclusive performance - and since there were only a few of them - they turned heads. I suppose that when Mercedes took the turn towards Luxury - it made sense to create a performance "division" - but BMW has not established its NON-M cars in the Luxury area - they are not - and the need for every vehicle to have a performance version is moot. IF will work for a while - after which the length of the ALpha-Numeric "name" of the cars will simply not be able to be put on the vehicle width.

Then I guess we will see an X5 M CSL at some point. So sad. So very sad....

The ONLY reason CSL popped up was because M had lost all impact.

With so many M-models running around, it will be hard for people to understand what the flagship or highest-level M is. This is exactly what has happened with AMG. Between the AMG 43, AMG 63, AMG 63 S and AMG 65 monikers, I bet a lot of people don't really understand the difference between an AMG 43 and AMG 65, when the price difference could be double.

I know. Let's create a new name: M-CSL-M.

They should revive the “is” line for the next tier down from true M cars.

The two numbers after the 3/5/7 need to refer to engine size.
no letters = base car
IS = sport model
IL = luxury

M should only be used on 2-3 models at most.

Let's be real. "AMG" means nothing to 99% of the population anyway. Those same buyers or observers who don't even know if their cars have a 4 cylinder or 6 cylinder. The same can be said for "M" or "RS". and "V". (I remember at an auto show I had to "educate" a very enthusiastic "enthusiast" on the difference between V-Sport and V for Cadillac. He continued to insist they were the same thing so I walked away).

Those "in the know" will know and appreciate the differences. These folks are the ones who will be buying and driving these cars. True enthusiasts will be doing sufficient researching, reading, and following of the industry that they will know the differences, the same as when these names weren't so widely used.

lets M is all,, or lets AMG it all..
don't forget the majority of BMWs or Mercedes sold will be quite basic bog standard with little standard equipment, bought by people just for the badge.. that's the UK I'm talking about ...

BMW has destroyed the integrity of the 'M' moniker and its now lost significance.

M cars and AMG have become so homogenized and mainstream the marques have diluted the badge, prestige and pedigree. Why buy a real M car when you can opt for the M package and save the money for say repairs when the warranty runs out?

I have owned numerous M3 and M5's and would never buy another again for these reasons as it isn't worth the premium anymore with the unlimited production and "package" cars.

I'm predicting that the upcoming BMW 2019 M320i will be a big seller. ;-)
