#NYIAS: The All-new BMW X4 M40i Is HERE, But Does It Light YOUR Fire?
So, let's say that you're a fan of the BMW M2. You find it to be the best driver's car in BMW's current product portfolio.
There's just one problem: It's not practical and you need something with more utility. What do you do?
New York Auto Show
BMW's answer: Step up into the X3 M40i or the all-new X4 M40i. The latter was seen for the very first time at the 2018 New York Auto Show (NYIAS). Although it debuted in Geneva, we hadn't snapped it until now.
Comparing the last-gen X4 to the all-new X4, there's no doubt BMW tidied it up in some much needed areas. Take, for example, the profile that now doesn't look smushed and bulbous. That's a huge win, right there.
But is it lighting a fire under your rear end? Does it make you want to RUN to the nearest BMW showroom? What say you, Spies?

@MD This whole thing is just sad. A real M station wagon would be cool, this is just an insult to the BMW badge.

If I'm to judge primarily from the photos, I prefer the current X4's styling much better.

Yet another humpy-ass looking awkward derivation of BMW's expanding line-up. They should maybe concentrate on tightening up what they already have instead of spreading themselves so thin.

I'm with Dexter1 on this. It looks awkward and frumpy. It's not my interest in the least.

Yes, it absolutely lights my fire.....so I can burn this thing. The entire design is so ungainly from the donkey-snout front-end, to the very awkward rear quarter window, to the squinting and ill-proportioned rear taillgiths, to that rental-chic interior.

It's less goofy than the old one, and bizarrely the will sell everyone they build.

BMW has spread itself too thin between the X1, X2, X3, and X4. The difference between the X1, X2 and X3 is too small to expand the number of buyers. A sale of the X2 will likely mean one less of an X1. A sale of an X3 will likely mean one less sale of an X2.
BMW's U.S. sales fell in 2016 almost 10% and were down mid-single digits in 2017. In 2018, BMW's US. sales has thus far risen less than half the rate of Audi's.

@ GermanNut: I was waiting for you to also comment on the cheap interior because more than ever you would have been right. BMW is definitely dropping the ball.

I agree BMW's interiors are a huge let down. I understand this is an M-Sport version so it's going to be a bit more sporty but even the regular model interiors are so cheap looking.
With Audi's now futuristic all-LED screen interiors spreading across the lineup from the A8, to the A7 and A6 and likely onto the SUV models in the next few years, BMW's interiors will look even more outdated and cheap than they do today unless BMW rethinks its interiors and spreads that rethink across its lineup.

BMW's effort to create something unique looks to be a dead-end.

As "M" is basically a brand-wide trim package at this point, I guess the next step is to add decals (ala 1977 Trans Am bird on the hood) to differentiate them from the non-M's.
