#NYIAS: Volkswagen Feels Success For The Tanoak Pickup Could Be With Women Buyers
Volkswagen's North American executive team swears the Atlas Tanoak unibody pickup that captivated the auto show here last week is "just a concept," built to gauge market reaction and show what the automaker's flexible MQB platform can do.

"There are no plans right now for production," Volks- wagen of America CEO Hinrich Woebcken said.

But between the sound bites and official statements tamping down expectations, some things were clear: Woeb- cken and his team want to build this pickup, they may need to build it and they're actively gaming out scenarios that would justify doing so.

Oh Lordy: "they're actively gaming out scenarios that would justify doing so." That will take a decade. Either put it on the line in Chattanooga or shut up, VW. This could be built with Atlas tooling. Logically, if VW is serious about reaching their 800K sales goal in the USA, they would know their buyer demographic BEFORE doing a concept and the concept would be close to production with the production vehicle close to market. It's called rhythm.

Having run a VW store for 15+ years I can say they don't have a clue who their buyers are... They show products we desperately need(like the Atlas) and by the time they are production ready it is years later and the vehicle by that time already is outdated(The Atlas is a perfect example) What is worse is they don't prioritize sold orders to be built first instead they build vehicle as they see fit and if a sold order is in that batch or not they could care less.

My first trial by fire in management was at a VW dealer. VW is truly acrimonious toward its dealers and even worse the buyers of their vehicles. I've truly never seen a more consumer unfriendly brand.

Gee - there are no plans on producing the vehicle - right in the article.

Apparently women do not have enough yet?

My wife laughed at the VW Tanpine. Her reaction was "Does VW think women can't drive a real truck?" I might add that she can drive a heavy duty Ram with a 5th wheel auto transport trailer and back it up without incident.

Noticing the negative scores for above posts I suspect there are a few VW lovers who cannot handle the truth. I voted positive on each to try to even the score.

They probably have a VW and a Giulia in the driveway and say they use Uber because it's convenient when in reality neither of their cars can be depended on.

I hope they're right, because the way they've tarted this thing up they have no hope of selling any to men.

My wife drives a Ram 1500 ST as her daily driver. She doesn't like this, and she (and I) like VW overall. But her dislike could be tied to this being a concept, which always designed more wildly than a production vehicle.

I'd like to see a near-production level model before passing judgement. Initially, the concept is definitely likable. It's taken a little time, but I've started to see more or the newer Honda Ridgeline on the roads these days.

Just looks like VW is playing games though. M-B with have the X-class on US roads before VW makes some kind of determination.

I'm hoping that Mercedes is too smart to put its Nissan Navara on sale in the USA.
