Tariff On Chinese Cars Could Cripple Buick Envision And Cadillac CT6 Hybrid Sales
General Motors has to deal with new tariffs on cars it imports into the United States from China after Robert Lighthizer, US trade representative, announced a new batch of trade measures, highlighted by a 25-percent tariff on Chinese-made cars. The move doesn’t affect any of China’s domestic auto companies because none of them actually sell cars in North America. In fact, it’s probably going to end that little experiment before it even begins. General Motors, however, will be affected.

Everything is negotiable. Negotiating 101; make your first offer outrageous and negotiate down from there. Right now USA cars that go into China are hit with a 25% tariff (see Tesla) while a Chinese car into the USA gets a 2.5% tariff. They are coming (see Geely/Volvo). The USA wins if the tariff on cars from both countries is the same, ideally zero. Don't forget those Buicks and Caddys built by GM in China are built in a factory that is majority owned by the Chinese partner who received all GM patents used in those cars w/o paying any royalty as part of the deal. Unlike the USA, a company can't build a plant in China without a majority Chinese partner. That needs to change as well.

Finally someone with "real" knowledge about China and the unfair playing field that they impose on other countries imports...

China only wants one way trade as in "buy my shit only". They only want to sell you finished goods of which they may even dump in your country cheaper that what they sell it for domestically. To make matters even worse is that China only buys raw, unfinished natural resources wholesale to make cheap shit to load Walmart and Amazon with so the true trade imbalance is actually much worse than it actually appears.

Trump is right to impose tariffs on China as that is what China does to the US and Canada and everyone else. I would take it one step further and bump China off of the list from "Most Favored Nations" status (thank "Rapist" Bill Clinton for that one) and impose realistic tariffs until the trade deficit comes down and Beijing levels the US import duties to be more fair and amicable to both nations.

My girlfriend is from Shanghai and she swears that designer clothing (made in China) is cheaper in Toronto than in Shanghai and has friends and family come here to visit for shopping sprees.

The only dickheads screaming "you cant do this" are the assholes with vested interests in buying and importing cheap Chinese goods to Murica and I'm one of them -full disclosure. I'm not bitching about the tariffs either and think they are long overdue as I can buy finished parts made and shipped from my Chinese suppliers cheaper than I can buy the unfinished bar stock for and that's just wrong but without it I'd be out of business as all my competitors do full Chinese manufacturing. I only buy some parts from China and make the rest in Canada.

There are many reasons for this that are unrelated to tariffs, such as many brands operating in foreign countries via distributors, and that extra layer in the distribution model adding another margin and resulting in higher prices.

Toronto's Bloor Street -Mink Mile is on par with Rodeo Drive for designer stores and is a favorite of celebrities as they don't get harassed by the public and paparazzi scum like they do in other markets.
