Lexus Hopes To Crack The 35 Year Old Segment With New UX - Do They Have A Chance?

Lexus Hopes To Crack The 35 Year Old Segment With New UX - Do They Have A Chance?

With its new UX crossover in tow, Lexus now has a utility vehicle competing in every segment. However, it wants to make sure its getting the right customers behind the wheel. If the gargantuan GL is intended for large families with a fair amount of pocket change and an abundance of parking space, the UX is certainly aimed at childless urbanites who want something upscale but haven’t yet amassed the same level of wealth.

Lexus is aiming low for the subcompact luxury crossover’s base price, hoping to tap into the youth market. That’s important because the average owner for a Lexus-badged vehicle is around 60-years old. However, a cheap and youth-oriented vehicle for Lexus doesn’t mean the same thing as it does for Toyota and the MSRP is going to reflect that — despite UX’s downmarket push.

If they have no taste, then yes, they might have a chance.

The Batmobile fins in the rear taillights are just desperate. Toyota/Lexus are building the least attractive cars in the business.

Actually - this has the capability of being a huge hit for Toyota OUTSIDE the usa - and especially in Japan where this styling is more to their liking.

THe problem is - this again reduces the brand to a lower level - as IT competes with the 2nd tier group with Infiniti,VOlvo,Buick and others. IT will not be a good thing for the prestige of their larger offerings.

Lexus gets another hit... from the ugly stick :-/

I mean no disrespect to Lexus fans. The vehicles are respectable on so many levels. I just wonder if Lex fans like the look, or they just put up with it because it's a Lexus. As long as you like it... power on!

And it will sell and sell and sell...
The Camry is not better looking than any of the competition (ok, maybe the venerable Accord) yet it way outsells all of them.
So Toyo/Lexus is definitely doing something right.

Outside of the Jaguar F-Pace and the newer Volvos, no one makes a truly attractive small luxury SUV (especially BMW).

Lexus started the LUX market with the RX300 and has been the one to copy. The UX follows the same formula.

Love the extreme close ups.

The age 60 thing surprises me though.

I see a awful lot of senior retirees who live in a big retirement community near me drive them and in town drive them slow, a lot times 5 - 10 miles under the speed limit even on the freeway which can be very annoying.

Doesn't look bad but too similar to TM's CH-R.

The numbers will tell. Despite the opinions of many Lexus has a great track record of sales success with CUVs. This is a great car for the non enthusiast who wants a realiable vehicle that is well put together and nicer than the mainstream models from Toyota, Honda, Ford etc.
