Mazda's MX-5 To Get A Power Boost For 2019

For 2019, Mazda seems ready to offer two things MX-5 Miata buyers have long demanded: more power, plus a steering wheel that reaches towards the driver, instead of just tilting. These are big changes for a model where every minor detail is fussed over by engineers and enthusiasts alike.

The changes are detailed in a document — apparently originating from Mazda Canada — that details the changes coming for 2019. That doc found its way onto Reddit, which was then shared by joyful members of the Miata.net forum. How does an extra 26 horsepower sound?

Anything less that 275-300 horsepower is not worth mentioning.

Well-There is always "Flying Miata" if you need your power. Otherwise a nice upgrade for a car that weighs 2,350 LBS. Being able to rev into the 7 grand range is classic old school pre turbo which I like. It should sound nice as you are working to get your horsepower. I wonder if Fiat will bring the 124 GT over here with a more powerful turbo engine as well?

The Miata is a sports car that you can drive flat out around the track which indicates that it is woefully underpowered. Adding at least 100 horsepower more and handing it over to someone to tune the suspension more aggressively would be a step in addressing the stigma that you're driving a nail-girl or overaged hairdresser car.

50 horsepower and 50# torque would sound far better

For the starting point for a base Miata, yes.
