Tesla's Model Y Production To Start In Model 3 Factory Late Part Of 2019
Tesla Inc is targeting November 2019 as the start of production for its Model Y sport utility vehicle, with production in China to begin two years later, two sources told Reuters this week, shedding some light on the electric vehicle maker’s next project that could tax its resources and capacity.

Reuters has learned the Silicon Valley company led by Chief Executive Elon Musk is accepting preliminary bids for supplier contracts on the Model Y, a compact crossover companion to the Model 3 sedan. Tesla has given suppliers scant details about the program and had not provided a production time frame, but has now indicated the vehicle would begin to be built at its Fremont, California, plant in November of next year, the two sources with knowledge of the supply chain said.

TeslaSpeak: "Late Part Of 2019"

Plain English: "Maybe a trickle by 2021"

The Model Y is based on the Model 3: same powertrain, motor, and likely a near identical interior. They can even build it on the same line like the S and X (now the S and X have separate lines). It won't have the same ramp-up issues as the 3, at least far fewer. If they put normal doors on it, it'll be their easiest launch ever. If they get too fancy (falcon wings, new wiring harness, etc.) then I can see it going into 2020 or 2021.

Brilliant!
The Model 3 will not reach production goals any time soon if ever.
Quality control is abysmal and is being left unaddressed.
So, let's add another model.
The ONLY way the Model Y would make sense would be if they killed to horrible Model X in the process.

Why does anyone car about a date for the "start" of production from Tesla - what we really need is the date that vehicle will comes off the assembly line completed.
