WHICH Would You Rather? A High-performance Sports Car OR A High-performance SUV?
You may have noticed as of the past week we've been doing some thinking around automobiles. Really, it's coming down to better understanding just how far consumer tastes have shifted.

While we know most people want a sport-utility vehicle in their driveway, we also know that high-performance cars are not dead.

There's a reason why the horsepower wars are alive and well and Tesla's Model S P100D is a darling. What isn't clear, however, is where this line is drawn.

THINK: Would you rather have a Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk OR a Dodge Challenger Hellcat? Would you rather have a BMW X5M or a BMW M5?

That said, we've go to ask: WHICH would you rather? A high-performance sports car or a high-performance SUV?

Easy decision: sports car. I already have a "high-performance" SUV.

With their higher ground clearance meaning a higher center of gravity - an SUV just cannot be as satisfying as a performance vehicle as a real Exotic Sports car. There is only so much you can do to attempt to overcome the basics Physics of an SUV. They will still be a compromise.

So - give me a Portofino over a Rover any day

S6 Avant. Best of both worlds. Performance and room to carry the family’s gear.

Depends.
Living in Chicago 4wd is important to me so Trackhawk over Challenger but definitely M5 over X5M.
At the moment I'm happy though, with my current daily driver, S8 Plus and have no plans to replace it anytime soon.

LOL Why would anyone purposefully choose to live in Chicago?

It may be hard for Matt to understand - but there are LOTS of people out there who value having four seasons - and others that are WINTER activity buffs as well. Living in the Chicago area is much like living in the NYC area - they have the Plays, exhibitions, museums and the nightlife that a 24 hour city has - and Just like NYC - there are really nice places to live - some VERY upscale and Many good neighborhoods. AS the economic leader of the area - high end jobs are available in most fields as well.

Ever since the Macan has been introduced, Porsche salespeople have been telling prospective buyers that it is like a "4 door Cayman". Not even close. An SUV, regardless of power (and even a good handling SUV like the Macan), cannot provide the emotional connection to driving as does a sports car.

Sports car for me

Well first off a "High performance SUV" to me is a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, an SUV meant to do things an SUV was originally design to do.

These "High performance CUV's" are tarted and lifted cars, compromised vehicles. I have yet to see one of things thing load up with gear or used as a SUV should, except for going to the mall in the snow. I have never understood the appeal of them, except that they are trendy, like wagons in the 70's.

I have a sports and a real SUV (it has a low range that I do use). so it's the sport car for me.

There are differing degrees of "sports cars". Exotic/super sports cars. Sports cars (i.e., MX-5, 86, 370Z). Sports sedans. Sports coupes. I can't just say "sports cars" and lump all of these into one because a Lamborghini Huracan provides a much different driving experience than an AMG E63S. And a C63S Coupe provides a somewhat different driving experience than a C63S Sedan.

I could easily substitute an X5M or Cayenne Turbo S for an M5 or Panamera Turbo S, without feeling a high degree of separation. However, I wouldn't trade in a Huracan or 911 Turbo S for any of the 4 aforementioned.
If I walked into a Mercedes dealership, if I wanted a "practical sports vehicle", I would consider one car between the E63S and GLE63S/GLE63S Coupe, but if I wanted an AMG GT R, I wouldn't consider any other AMG.

I always considered my 450SEL 6.9 as my favorite car - even though an S class is certainly no considered a sports car - this one could not be called anything else. At the time (And we are talking 40 years ago or so) - there were few cars of ANY other type that could compete.

However - I still consider a proper SUV to be TRUCK based. If I want a big vehicle for moving people around or cargo -they are a better choice - and they last forever too. So - I really never jumped on the "crossover" wagon - I have always felt that if I cannot get there in a front wheel drive vehicle - that most will not get there in a crossover either.

I love high performance SUV's but they can't match the fun of a car in my opinion. So I will have to go with car, but for good measure make sure at least 2 of your garage bays has one of each.

Agent 00R - I note that the price of Aluminum has gone up over 10% already in the "trade war" along with the Russian Sanctions(Russia's largest supplier cannot not be used). WHile all cars have some aluminum in them to reduce weight today - obviously this has a greater effect on vehicles with greater Aluminum content - like the Ford F-150.

Obviously - this will mean double trouble along with Tariffs on specific vehicles - maybe you could look into it!
