Toyota Taking On GTI With GR Version Of Corolla Hatchback
Last year, Toyota announced it will be spicing up some of its existing models with the help of its performance sub-brand, Gazoo Racing. It comprises of three tiers, with the entry-level GR Sport range, the mid-range GR, and the flagship GRMN. Currently, the only car to get the full fat GRMN treatment is the supercharged Yaris. Should be an interesting comparison between the legendary GTI and the new Toyota GR Corolla.
The GR Corolla looks so typically 'Japanese' looking it is hard to distinguish from all other small Japanese cars.

Why go with the cartoon character the Great Gazoo for the name of their performance division? I don't understand why they just didn't resurrect "SR5".

Not enough potential sales to put a lot effort into a RS or GTI competitor. The new Corolla is a fine engineering example and I don't see a turbo in its future.

Toyota tried this before with the Corolla XRS and Matrix XRS both of which were incredibly chincy and didn't make any power until a useless 6500+ rpm at which point the engine was screaming so loudly it sounded like it would blow up any second! I sold a few of them and my mom even owned one for a short period when my brother wrecked her GTI and she needed a car in a pinch which last all of 6 months as she was hated the car so much she ordered another GTI
