R8 supercar is the first Audi to join 300kph club

PARIS - Audi’s R8 will be the German premium automaker’s first car to break the 300kph barrier.

Powered by a 420hp V-8 engine, the supercar will have a top speed of 301kph. All other Audis will continue to be electronically limited to 250kph.

“It is impossible to sell a vehicle like the R8 with a speed limiter,” an Audi spokesman told Automotive News Europe.

The mid-engine R8 is targeted at the Porsche 911, which has a top speed of 285kph to 310kph, depending on the model.

Audi is breaking a voluntary agreement by German carmakers - excluding Porsche – to limit the top speed of their cars to 250kph.

Awesome news. This car will be a slick looking speed rocket courtesy of Ingolstadt and by the initial review it has the characteristics of its competition from Bavaria all wrapped in a seductive package.

A top speed of 301 kph is seriously fast.

that's fast, sure, but it's not as fast as I'd have expected it to be. The much heavier and less aerodynamic M5 sedan, for example, would have a top speed over 330kph if they removed the governor.

Yeah the M5 is probably faster in top speed, because First: Weight has got nothing to do with top speed.
Second: The M5 has allot more power
Third: The M5 is more aerodynamic

Until you come to track offcourse; it's there where the R8 will leave nothing left of the M5.

Heyhuub: weight has A LOT to do with it, and M5 is more aerodynamic than the R8 only in ur dreams. It has more HP + audi has 4 wheel drive which also slows it down

The point is that once u get passed a certain speed depending on the car, every additional km/h is squared if not quadrupled harder to get

BTW: Audi was already hitting 400 km/h in 1937, so its not the first audi

@Carnut:

NO weight has nothing to do with top speed, weight only has effect on the accaleration towards it. If weight affected top speed the Koenigsegg CCX would have a far greater top speed then the Bugatti Veyron.

And secondly Yes the M5 is probably more aerodynamic, most saloon cars have better aerodynamic properties then sportscars.
The M5 has probably got a dragcoefficient of about 0,3. Whereas most sportscars like the Lamborghini Gallardo or Ferrari F430 have a dragcoefficient of about 0,34. Just because they look aerodynamic doesn't mean that they are.
What do you think all those airducts and vents do to the dragcoefficient, or defucers for that matter.

Yes, but BMW does not offer a car with an unrestricted top speed in the U.S.

Note: the BMW M3 CSL was only sold in Europe

JRob keyword in your statement is "WOULD". BMW remained under the agreement with all carsm including all "M" cars and therefore no M car will clear the restrictions.

I guess MDalle, but it matters from a U.S. consumer point of view.

You can get the speed limiter removed quite easily. The difference is with the BMW you have to ask the dealer. With the Audi R8, MB SLR and Porsches your cars come straight from the factory without a limiter so there is no need to ask.

A minute technicality, but one none the less

Fricken relax, GermanNutjob...Everyone has their rights to an opinion...even if it's just "meh" LOL.

I really do think R8 is a nice built machine. I think its design screams, "I'm different looking", much like your children as you watch them grow older and want to be different from the rest.

Now, I can't say samething about rest of Audi car designs which I still call it "Loaf of bread designs" all bloated and grotesquly boring looking.

Didn't Mercedes break it with the McLaren/Mercedes? I don't think the Z8 broke it. That's pretty stupid their little "Gentleman's agreement". Keep it to the non performance models. If the S class and 7 series dont go above 155... whatever. But the M 3,5, a few of the AMG's, and the S and RS models (as well as any sports cars they make) need to be unrestricted. It's not right!

I Think that this not it's not the one with led lights since they aren't released yet but yes, the R8 will be the first production car having Headlights tottaly by leds!! This one i think it's only the day lights that are by leds!

Lets put things in perspective, if you have a car weighing 100,000 lbs (exaggerated to help you visualise) and a car weighing 1000 lbs, both with the same engine, you think they'll have the same top speed. No. The laws of mechanics proves it.

Yeah well now you're excagerating. The differences in car weight are mostly to small to have any serious impact on top speed, it may sound weird but it is true.
That's why the Bugatti Veyron despite being 700KG heavier then the Koenigsegg CCX and only having 200HP more it can achieve a greater top speed. Because the weight isseu has little affect on the top speed.
Top speed has all to do with aerodynamic drag and the power of the car.

I once did 250km in my M5. Thats coz of the supid limiter, i just wish they remove it from the beggining..
