Too Little, Too Late? Cadillac Answers Navigator Threat With A $10,000 Discount
In Cadillac and Lincoln showrooms, the battle of the behemoths is on.

General Motors Co. is stepping up its defense of the Escalade SUV, a cash cow for Cadillac and the company, by offering $10,000 discounts to some current customers to keep them from straying to Ford Motor Co.’s hot-selling new Lincoln Navigator.

The navigator is ugly to me.. look like the Infiniti GX80 had a baby with a Benz GL450

Another one sided article that fails to give a complete picture of the market.

Cadillac Escalade sales are up - more than 12% for the quarter - and 18% for the smaller one. When you look at the Lincoln increase - remember that it compares to the OLD version that had already tanked in sales. WE already know that new models typically take off at the introduction - but as we can see - it is not taking away from Cadillac. YOu would need to look at the sales of other Full Size vehicles to see where the sales are coming from.

It is not too late. The navigator indeed is miles ahead of the escalade. But that because lincoln just redesigned the navigator. If anything, GM is using cash to buy time until the new escalade comes out. That just how the game works. Old vehicle cheaper to make, therefore, sale at cheaper to move number. Otherwise nagivator would win in every sale if they are priced the same.

Navigator=IRS Exalade=Log axle... Navigator wins.

The Navigator is way ahead of the Escalade in almost every aspect. The Escalade has held its own in sales volumes...but I am sure GM is watching the situation very closely because Escalade is their cash cow, and they know full well that it is not very competitive with the Navigator. GM putting $10K on the Escalade is a sign that they are seeing buyers move to the Navigator.

A redesigned escalade with IRS and Supercruise will be very competetive with the Navigator. I would look to see GM releasing info about the redesigned full size SUVs soon...they can not afford to let Ford gain traction in this segment that they have owned for so long.

As a former Escalade owner, Cadillac did the same thing in September of 2017 for 2015 owners and lessees. It's a very smart strategy. It keeps Escalade owners in the family, by offering them a real incentive to upgrade to a newer vehicle and a higher trim level that they had before. It's very smart and it works!
The Navigator's has three hurdles: 1) Styling 2) Escalade cache 3) The new Expedition.

The Navigator (once discovered) will have the same cachet as the Escalade. Where GM has a big advantage in cachet is in the mainstream brands...Yukon/Tahoe/Suburban do not look out of place at exclusive country clubs or the pickup line of expensive private schools while the Expedition certainly does

Cadillac needs to do something with their SUV lineup...The Aviator is even more of a knockout than the Navigator.

The last "all new" GM truck platform was far from all new given that it was a mild update of the previous platform with new styling. The current Escalade is stuck with that platform. To compound matters, the current "all new" GM truck platform is similarly NOT all new. New styling? Check! Totally new everything else? Nope! Mild revision of the mild revision of the previous platform? Check! The Escalade desperately needs IRS. We truly love ours, but the Mercedes GL (now GLS) we had before we had too many boys to haul around had far better road manners. Ironically, the outgoing IRS Navigator doesn't handle as well as the stick-axle Escalade, but the new Navigator is a definite leap forward for Ford/Lincoln.

The new GM platform (T1) is all new and GM has supposedly approved an IRS for Escalade (I have not read anything about IRS for the Tahoe/Yukon). Hopefully they do something significant with these SUVs...things don't look so promising from the New Silverado/Sierra. I would hope they can at least figure out how to get rid of that ridiculous shifter they still use on a vehicle that can top $100K.

I know Escalade sales are softening but are they that soft, or is Caddy just that concerned?
And this is really just a targeted rebate, no? How does Caddy know who's interested in buying what?
