Happy National Mustang Day! Tell Us WHICH Model Was Your Favorite Ever?

Hundreds of Mustang enthusiasts will converged at Ford World Headquarters this morning in honor of National Mustang Day.

To celebrate Ford Mustang’s 54th birthday and its third straight year as best-selling sports car in the world, the Ford team in Dearborn, Mich., is hosted an event with the simple moniker “Cars & Coffee.”

Mustang owner’s clubs around the globe, including Canada, Mexico and Australia, are holding their own celebrations, according to the automaker.

You’ve got to hand it to Ford in making a big deal out of 54. Fifty years old, sure. But 54? Maybe the thinking is every year after a certain age is a gift, why wait for the so-called “landmark” birthdays?

My first car ever was a blue 1974 Mustang II Coupe. Not the best Mustang in my opinion but it holds a special place in my heart, since it was my first baby.

So many cool ones over the years but let's open this up and tell us WHICH was your favorite? And if you could have it now, what color/option combo would it be?

Spies, discuss...

The only Ford Mustang I ever had was a 1967 Fastback GT with a 390 engine.
THe car - when it ran - AND when it ran right - was more than a handful - you could hardly keep the rear tires from spinning - it was more a drag racer than a handler - the back seat was a joke - and it rode like it had solid links instead of springs.

Between Ford and Myself - that car probably spent well over a year of the first two in service - things would just fall off the car - it was a real mess. So much so that my local Ford dealer would not offer me a trade in on it. I suppose you can guess why I never had another Mustang!

I learned to drive (circa 1984) on a 1970 Red and Black "secretary special" and had my first accident too! Agree with Tom - it would spin out if you sneezed or farted while driving! I don't know how McQueen piloted the "Bullit" - that's precision driving - its a handful to keep in its lane, miracle I wasn't killed!

Second Mustang was 1972 351 Mach 1 - with the near-horizontal window. Slightly better driver than the 1970 but impossible to see out of.

Neither of them would win any reliability awards but were fun nonetheless. I can see why Ford was called "Fix Or Repair Daily" back then. Worst was when I was cruising along at 70 MPH (scary!) and a wire came loose and whole engine shut down in the Mach 1. Like I said - its a miracle the thing didn't kill me.

The Mach 1 was my dad's and he and I drove it down from NJ to Charlotte Motor Speedway in 1999 to the "35th Anniversary of the Mustang". What a fun and special weekend. Yes, we broke down on the way home and I missed work for two days while the car got fixed.

Favorite is a 64 1/2 289 convertible in red. Have owned a 2001 GT coupe and currently have a 2006 GT vert in the garage. Not the best car, not the best performer, not a great daily driver, and by no means, not economical, but on a sunny weekend, nothing is better than a drive on some back roads, hearing the engine come to life and shift through the gears. Will never get rid of it.

L-O-V-E LOVE the 68 GT500KR CobraJet in my "grandfather's" collection. I first drove it when I was 16 from the hangar where it lives to detail it. Every now and then I drive it to keep it limber.

L-O-V-E LOVE my 17 GT350

M-I-S-S MISS my 71 Mustang Grande It was a horribly worn-out car that I kept bandaged together. The interior did not match the exterior because the shot interior that was in it when I got it I replace with seats from a wrecked Mustang.

Nice to see how many favorites based on actual ownership or family ties. My favorite is the '67 fastback...remember walking around a new one in my college parking lot a dozen times. Didn't own my first Mustang until 2010, a GT500. Great fun to drive but the rear end kept breaking down and ended up getting my money back under state lemon law. Despite that I would gladly buy another one.
