SPIED! Is THIS The Color Of 2018?

SPIED! Is THIS The Color Of 2018?
Now I don't know about you, boys and girls, but the world of automobiles is similar to that of fashion. That's because there's a certain cyclicality to it.

Certain niches have ebbs and flows of popularity. And, in addition, colors tend to fall in and out of fashion.

This is why Agent 001 loves talking to the designers. He can pick their brains about what's hot and what's not.

While it's tough to stay ahead of the game, I think I may have caught something. As I was getting some steps in this weekend walking around a northern New Jersey village, I ran across a Porsche 911 in a stunning blue. It's a color that's been making its way around but it seems that every manufacturer is starting to make it available in some form or fashion.

Most palettes have an outrageous blue.

Having said that, Spies, I've got to ask: Do YOU think that this blue will be the color of 2018? What say you, Spies?

I've never paid attention to claims of "this year's color." I'm into blues, and this blue doesn't appeal to me, either. I prefer metallic paint, too.

I concur with Steve for all the same reasons.

The car in the photo is a custom blue "paint-to-sample". Looking at the configurator for 2019, Porsche will charge $11,000+ to paint a car in any color you want. Porsche has dropped their sapphire blue and graphite blue colors, but Miami blue (a lighter blue than the one in the picture, but just as striking) is a $3,000+ upgrade.

These bright blues have their day now, but I always wonder if owners grow tired of them quickly ( and how are they on re-sale?)

This may be Riviera Blue, Mexico Blue or Miami Blue.

I can't tell.

That electric blue color is very popular at Ford dealers.

It feels "Shelby" even though it isn't.

The reason why colors are cyclical - is because while you may be able to create a new SHADE or Mixture of colors - the basic colors are a closed set - we cannot create new ones.

So - people buy the latest new shade until there are so many of them around that the people want something different - so they buy the latest new shade - and so forth.

Yes - since cars are being kept by owners far longer than ever before - that means that some have to keep their shade of color longer than they would wish. Repainting a car to change the color is prohibitive.

It is like the metal your Bathroom Faucet is made of - Chrome plated - Bronze - Brass - Gold - Stainless steel - Brushed Nickel - Black Stainless steel - .... It is just a way of getting you to replace otherwise fine fixtures because they are "outdated". WHen I built my house in the 60's - Stainless steel appliances were all the rage - went out of style - and actually returned - and now are going out of style again.

That is Mexico blue I believe, a paint to sample colour as noted earlier. Colour selection is often driven (no pun intended) by desire to be noticed. This one certainly stands out while others prefer the more subtle greys and silvers. At my age, I'm in the more subtle camp.

The bigger question is why did this guy leave so much room in front of him. He is asked for a bumper rub by the guy behind him.

For BMW, the last 3 years, when a vehicle has an M Sport package, Estoril Blue Metallic is the number one selling color, if available for that model.
The X2 has a Misano Blue Metallic that is very popular with that vehicle. So these bright blues have been around are still popular. I like it, but just like any color, it depends the vehicle it is on.

Looks like a slightly deeper shade of Miami Blue.
