Volkswagen Commits To More Powerful R Models Across The Line Up

Volkswagen has told us that the next generation of its hot R models are about to get a jump in performance and capability, and will include a range of both SUVs and electric ID models for the first time.

Currently, the R treatment is only applied to the Golf and Scirocco (yes, it’s still on sale), but VW bosses have confirmed that the R treatment in future will not only spread to compact SUVs, the T-Roc and Tiguan, but also VW’s incoming electric ID range.

VW has played its first hand at connecting the ID and R brands with the ID R Pikes Peak racer – an electric prototype racing car that VW has engineered to break the electric car record at the Pikes Peak event. The ID R will also form a basis of VW’s development of the next-generation electric World Rallycross car – a racing series it has also connected to the R branding with the Polo R WRX entry.

Competition improves the breed. As in all industries, take your game up to match or exceed the competition or be left behind. While I am all for more horsepower I suspect at some point insurers will call a halt to all the fun as they did in the late 70's and 80's. As a side bar, my youngest son pays less for insurance on his new Demon than he pays on his wife's new Honda Type R, go figure.

Since we do not know the driving record of your son or his wife - we do not really have a comparison - HOWEVER - if BOTH cars are on a FAMILY policy - you do not have the option of assigning cars to a particular person - generally the insurance companies price the policy based on the WORST driver - and the car that requires the most money to insure first. That would indicate that your daughter in law's driving record is worse than your son's is.

Insurance practice depends on the state. Many let you assign drivers to a vehicle and rate that one appropriately. So your newly minted teenage driver drives the old sedan inherited from grandma and not your Mercedes, all on the family policy. Saves a lot. Also if the cars are registered to different people that is assignment as well.

SOME FREE ADVICE TO VW MANAGEMENT -

Put the GTI's 2.0 Turbo into the Golf All-Track Wagon add some blacked out "Rally" trip (ala Subaru WRX/STI), give it the Euro Golf's Plaid interior, and call it the All-Track GLI, price it about $5,000 higher than the std Alltrack.

Put it in some video games. Rally fan-boys (and adults like me who like the AllTrack 6-speed but think it lacks power) will snap them up.

The explanation the insurance company gave was that there are considerably more Civics, considerably more accidents with them and considerably more thefts of Civics. Horsepower did not enter into their thinking. Both have not received a moving violation in five years and no accident claims made.
