UK Introduces Variable Speed Limits And Speeding Tickets Increase 10 Fold

Variable motorway speed limits are to be comprehensively reviewed, after it was revealed ten times more drivers were issued with a speeding ticket in 2017 in areas with reduced limits.

Police data, released following a series of Freedom of Information requests, revealed 72,348 drivers were issued with speeding tickets last year on motorways with variable speed limits, up from just 7,064 in 2013. 45,919 drivers were caught out in 2016.

This would probably be struck down in the USA - all it is - is a way to generate more Ticket revenue - and more money for Insurance companies - but it cannot be proven that constantly changing speed limits provides actual driving benefits.

However - at least one state - Georgia - has a history of local governments who do this to generate ticket revenue.

Too bad - when speed limits are electronically controlled - speeding tickets will simply disappear .

Virginia has variable speed limits on a section of I-80, but all I see it do is cause the vehicles to clump up and just slow the flow down. I don't think they have any speed cameras, though. Seattle also has variable speeds as I-5 enters Seattle from the south, and I also believe Portland OR has some on I-5 through their downtown. Oregon does have speed cameras, from what I've heard.

Anyone who thinks enforcing the formerly-advisory variable limits was about safety is terminally naive. As advisory limits, these were brilliant and worked well. As enforceable limits, they are larcenous rackets.
