2040 UK Fossil Fuel Ban Outlines EV Car Minimum Travel Range

New sales of petrol and diesel cars, as well as conventional hybrids such as the Toyota Prius, will be banned from 2040 after more details were revealed about the Government’s petrol and diesel car ‘ban’.

Dubbed Road to Zero, the forthcoming rules will prohibit the sale of new cars from 2040 that are incapable of travelling for 50 miles or more on battery power alone.

A lot can happen in 22 years, so don't put your money on today's predictions of the future. When I shop for a new vehicle, I don't put much credence on the media's reporting of "the hot new thing."

Gee Steve - they told is in the 1970's that we had less than 30 years of oil left - YOU mean that did not turn out to be true?

I cannot see why a Hybrid COULD not still have a 50 Mile EV range. In 22 years - the majority of cars in England will still be ICE powered in some way - and a high percentage of them will still be Diesels.

How is TVR going to comply with this - there is not enough space inside one of them for a 50 mile battery!

@TomM: Indeed! And remember when the EPA first enacted "aggressive" fuel economy regulations and US automakers said it was impossible to meet them? Well, the world, along with US automakers, surpassed those old MPG numbers handily, AND increased power, AND lowered emissions! Imagine that: Humanity did what corporations told us was impossible, just a few decades ago.

The same is true of fossil fuels. Mazda expects to release their newest Skyactiv gasoline-powered engine by the end of 2019 (next year), and if it delivers as promised (BIG "IF"), you'll get substantially better fuel economy with substantially lower emissions than current ICE. In fact, it'll be more fuel-efficient and cost less than many PHEVs, using ICE!

The University of Waterloo also alleges to have cheap, simple, reliable technology to make diesel emissions only 20% of the current strictest European emissions. That's something big, too!

And these are just some of the new ICE technologies that are just around the corner, and they might prove to me more immediately usable and practical than today's EVs or PHEVs.

Add to that that EVs are also advancing like crazy, as is battery technology and recharging technology.

Who knows what the future holds? It's a dumb idea to limit the future to today's limited beliefs and understandings. Imagine people in 1996 dictating how vehicles should be in 2018.

Stupid nanny state idiocy.

Doesn;t mean ban completely, i think they mean pure ICE, i think if a PHEV can do 50 miles or more on EV only then they'd still be allowed...

Personally, I think it's a stupid idea: Thou must use electric hybridization.

I much prefer results-driven solutions, such as a mandate to reduce (legitimate) real-world tailpipe emissions by X%. Use a gas/electric hybrid if you want. Use a pure diesel if you want. Burn Canadian bison dung, for all I care... so long as you legitimately meet the aggressive new emissions standards.

My approach will open the stage for all sorts of different innovations rather than saddling the future with today's limited "hybrids are god" thinking.
