Supra Spied In Final Stages Of Testing - Will It Live Up To The Lofty Expectations?
We all know it’s coming. In fact, we all know, more or less, what the final product will look like, based on the FT-1 Concept and the abundance of spy shots. The reborn Toyota Supra is currently undergoing its final testing stages, and car spotter Automotive Mike recently caught up with one of these advanced prototypes at the Nurburgring. Where else would a (hopefully) world-class sports car get put through its paces? Remember, the new Supra has some German engineering guts, thanks to the BMW-Toyota partnership.

While Toyota is keeping mum on details, we’ve learned several things about the new Supra thanks to several sources. For starters, power could come from a version of BMW’s S55 twin-scroll inline-six (which powers the M3, M4, and new M2 Competition) that could make as much as 450 hp.

Sorry - I have minimal expectations for a Toyota sports car - I supposed it would have to be faster than the fastest Corolla for them to say it is a sports car!

Again - while they have tried - Toyota's reputation is simply NOT for this type of vehicle - and there is no "cache'" in owning a higher powered Toyota - they are still cars for those who value their reliability - but do not car about performance. THAT is not a good reputation to have to expect anything from their sports car.

BUT - it would need to be priced similar to a Mustang or Camaro to actually sell. Attempts to put it into the Porsche/NSX category of price - will get it NSX type sales - maybe a few more because each dealers will need to get one and there are MORE Toyota dealers than Acura ones

Thank GOD someone is still taking reliability seriously. All the euro are pos...do a round in a euro pos and better replace the brakes, tranny, engine, electronics, suspension. Toyota FRS and Miata beats Hellcat https://youtu.be/NSq5Zb5ZNWY

I am much more interested in the Supra than either the GTR or the NSX, but I fear it will be priced foolishly and easily trounced by the Corvette for the same price or the Mustang for less. With a base of $30K it might have a chance, but all indications are more like double that.

They already have the Toyota 86 starting at $26k, they don't need another slow selling coupe for a couple grand more, or even to replace the 86.

Let's not go down the discussion of why the GT86 is a total sales failure yet again. This new vehicle should have been a Celica with a smooth Toyota 2.0T and a Supra with a V6T. It should have also replaced the RWD Subaru Impreza derived mongrel with the Super Beetle engine. The GT86 can be had at a steep discount because they just don't sell.

I they replace the 2.0 with a NA 2.4 or better a turbo 2.4(which appears to be the latest scuttlebutt), they will make it a better car than the current one. However they cannot move the 86/BRZ price point. It has to stay under 30 grand. If they start the Supra with BMW's I4 perhaps they can start it in the mid 30's. I simply don't think Toyota can get away with a 55K Supra. It simply will not fly. That is Z4/Z5 territory. The top of the line Supra has got fall in 10 to 15K cheaper for volume sales.
