Wireless Vehicle Charging Should Be Available Within Two Years

Wireless charging will be available on electric and plug-in vehicles within two years, one of the leading wireless tech companies has claimed. According to Graeme Davison, vice-president for business development and marketing at tech firm Qualcomm, technology similar to that currently used to charge mobile phones will arrive on the electric vehicle market "in 18-24 months."

Qualcomm is one of a number of companies chasing commercially available wireless charging, which uses high-frequency magnetic fields to transmit from a pad on the ground to a receiver on the vehicle. The vehicle then turns the magnetic pulses into electricity to charge the battery.

Wireless charging has been available for a couple of years now as an aftermarket add-on. It has not been very popular.
