BMW Tops Out At 616HP With M5 Competition Pack - Is There No End To The Horsepower War?

BMW has revealed an even more powerful version of its all-wheel-drive, V8-powered supersaloon. The new BMW M5 Competition gets 24bhp more power than the regular model, increasing the total output to 616bhp, as well as a sharper chassis and a menacing new look.

Rather than being an M5 with a Competition Pack added, BMW wants us to think of the new version as being more akin to the recently unveiled M2 Competition. So, instead of having a pack tagged on from the options list to bump the power up and sharpen the chassis, the M5 Competition is positioned as an entirely new model in its own right. As a result, the Competition is priced from £96,205, around £6500 more than a standard M5, and nearly £8k more than arch-rival Mercedes-AMG E63 S.

"menacing new look"

Does it really look that different?

The CTS-V has carried 640hp since 2016 so I wouldn't think it would be a surprise when the competition keeps upping the power.

I'd rather have a Porsche 911 Carrera 4, with "only" 370 horsepower, over this 640hp BMW. I'm into the total package. Not into horsepower wars and "mine is bigger than yours" bragging rights.

Well, an M5 or E63S might be deemed more of a "total package" than a 911. Gobs of power. Incredible handling. Legit room for 4 passengers, maybe 5. Legit room for luggage for all 4 passengers. Able to cruise quietly on the freeway when not in monster mode.

To address the question posed in the title of this post -

Eventually Government will realize that cars will be able to be LIMITED from the outside BY THEM. Speed limits will be enforced electronically - as well acceleration rates and space between cars as well. Accidents will fall dramatically. THat will reduce cars to simply transportation devices - and end the performance car as we know it. No - not soon - probably I will not be here to see that - but some teenagers today will be.
