Ford Says It Isn't Anti Sedan, Just Needs To Reinvent The Segment

Ford Motor Co.'s top executives on Thursday vigorously defended the automaker's plan to discontinue all of its North American sedans as a way to better meet customer needs by "reinventing the American car" rather than a retreat in response to falling sales.

During the company's annual shareholders meeting, CEO Jim Hackett and Executive Chairman Bill Ford were questioned repeatedly about the decision to ax the Fiesta, Fusion, Taurus and all but a wagon variant of the Focus in the U.S. over the next few years. Critics have called the move to focus on higher-margin SUVs, crossovers and pickups short-sighted, saying the automaker is abandoning segments that remain popular with entry-level buyers.

If Ford could create a Fusion-sized EV with a low price of entry, it would have something.

If FORD could perform miracles - they would not need to even make cars! But then - if they could perform miracles - an ICE car that offered 100MPG and Zero emissions would be a better choice -we still do have more gas stations.

THe fact is - they - and no one - can actually produce a Fusion (Call it MidSize) level Electric vehicle with what would be considered a LOW price of entry - unless YOU consider about $45-50,000 to be low priced. ANd even then - add in the need for a charging station at your home - a few thousand more.

The one thing that no manufacturer has been able to do is actually make a profit making Hybrids (Toyota JUST started to make a profit on the Prius line this year according to them) and/or EVs. GM loses money on every BOLT - and every VOLT sold. I would guess the same is true of the Malibu Hybrid as well. It was true of the Fusion Hybrids - and also note - if you actually went to a dealer to buy one of them - generally there were a few HIGH OPTIONED ones well over $40,000 - but it was hard to find a cheaper one.

What happened with FORD is the same thing that Cadillac failed at - they tried to drive down our throats little European cars - and the market has clearly said they do not want them. The manufacturers that are making a go of cars - like Toyota - actually produce some models for the USA that are not available (The cars - not the model names) elsewhere. To make money in CHINA - you need cars with back seat room - because there are a lot more cars there that are DRIVEN by a Chauffeur - so the result was some "LONG" vehicles. EVEN Mercedes did not offer the Short S-Class here while it was available in Germany.

@TomM please consider and implement the following: "Concision (alternatively brevity, laconicism, terseness, or conciseness) is minimizing words, while conveying an idea. It aims to enhance communication by eliminating redundancy without omitting important information."

The right small cars are very popular in the US even if they are on the expensive side. Look at the Honda Fit or the VW Golf/GTI for example.

@vdiv, the Golf is NOT "very popular". 91K units for the Golf is appalling compared to the Corolla. It's appalling even when compared the the Focus which is a dismal seller in the segment.

They want to add a couple of inches in height and offer 4wd, to reinvent Subaru the fastest growing brand.

The more I see of the Focus Active, the more I think it will be a dismal failure.

I can't remember the last time I see a Taurus or a Fusion on the road.

Its the Tesla/Fusion ratio. Where you live there are lots of Teslas and few Fusions. Starting about 100 miles east and continuing almost to the east coast its the reverse. Lots of Fusions and a few Teslas. Haven't seen a Tesla for a couple of weeks.

Ford has strong growth prospects:
1. F-series truck leadership continues with refresh f150. SD 10-speed new v8 n diesel... 1000 ft lbs...?
2. Midsize Ranger will give Toyota Tacoma strong competition.
3. New full size suv Navigator n Expedition taking high profit mkt share from GM.
4. New Focus Active will give Subaru strong competition.
5. New Bronco (Raptor) n baby Bronco will give Jeep strong competition.
6. New EV from Ford n all major auto makers will give Tesla strong competition. (best days for Tesla r over!!!)
7. ST performance versions on suvs will add mkt share.
8. Reinvented sedan (tall awd hatchback) will replace sedan sales with more profitable growth segments.
9. Hybrid versions will hedge higher fuel costs with best in class mpg.

What's not to like about Ford's future...

At Steelcase Hackett moved manufacturing to Mexico and shuttered US plants. I suspect new sedans will come from China.
