Alfa Romeo To Announce New Large SUV, High Performance Hybrids And Giulia Coupe

Alfa Romeo will announce its plans for a new large SUV, as well as a range of high-performance hybrids this June at FCA’s special event that will take place at the Balocco test track.

The Italian car maker is also expected to announce the much awaited Giulia Coupe, which will be offered in both two- and five-door bodystyles and will be powered by new high-performance energy recovery system powertrains (ERS), according to Autocar.

Yet nothing for Dodge or Chrysler and still more for Alfa Romeo that has fired two sales volume duds in a row. Yeah, making a coupe when the coupe market is even more dead than the sedan market makes total sense. #Asinine

If anything they should be announcing the new Jeep Grand Cherokee NOT another Alfa Romeo.

Again - you have to consider that the Alfa is sold worldwide- while the Chrysler/Dodge vehicles barely move at all outside the US and Canada. In Europe - an ALFA coupe would be a valid addition to the line.

So far - FCA has not shown the ability to actually produce a real NEW VEHICLE - with just about everything based on old technology. Since CARS are not selling well in the USA - what is the justification for FCA to spend a lot of money to develop a competitive platform for large cars- the Maserati does not sell well anywhere.

@joneshamilton You constantly demonstrate illogical reasoning. To say that Alfa Romeo is beating Genesis does not prove that Alfa is doing well. It just proves that Alfa sales are abysmal like Genesis.

@TomM Once again, you spew without any facts. Even worldwide, Alfa Romeo sales are negligible at best.

@mdarringer we get it you don’t like marcchione nor Fiat, however for some reason you seem to love Chrysler (well I guess some people also think Rosie o’donnell is hot).

Be that as it may you seem to have a hard time understanding that the goal for Alfa Romeo has never been to compete with the Germans in terms of volume by selling 1.5 to 2 million cars per year. It has always been to sell 400,000 units worldwide across an 8 model lineup. Roughly 50,000 units per model mostly based on variations of the new Giorgio platform and another 75,000 units using the platform for Maserati’s 6+ model lineup. That platform may also find its way into various Chrysler products depending on how the potential sale or non sale of FCA goes.

The biggest mistake marcchione has made has been the reliance and integration of Chrysler personnel and its dealer network to facilitate the goals for Alfa and Maserati in North America. Daimler kept the 2 companies separate for a reason, even DeTomaso quickly put a halt to integrating Chrysler personnel into Maserati in the mid 80s and it was Fiat’s reliance on Chrysler (ARDONA) in the early 90s that drove Alfa out of North America.

@Foncool more illogical reasoning.

The purpose of a company it to make a profit. New Dodges and Chryslers would provide that. Alfa Romeo is not a big profit center. Therefore making it priority #1 is poor management.

Your description of Alfa Romeo's goal shows you know nothing about making money.

These two vehicles are low hanging fruit for Alfa. The coupe wont be too expensive to develop. The Large SUV will very likely be a derivative of the Grand Cherokee so the development costs will also stay in check. Jeep Grand Cherokee and Ram are FCA's worldwide profit makers. Ram has been redesigned, and the next generation GC production is supposed to start July 2019, so its not like they are ignoring GC to bring more Alfas to market.

So if the Jeep Grand Cherokee is starting production in a year, where is the prototype?

Hopefully the coupe turns out to be amazing looking.

Umm NO. It was derived by resizing the LX and reworking it for modern crash standards. Of course on the latter, it failed right out of the box in testing. Put a Giulia on a lift next to an LX and you'll see the light.

But you're probably the type that says that the Levante, Ghibli, and Qporte are not LX cars either.

The Giorgio is "all new" only in the sense that there are people who fall for a manufacturer making a small change and calling it all new.

You really need to educate yourself on the products of your competition if you expect to sell at the level that Manfred has set as a goal for Genesis. The first thing you better learn if you want to play in the upscale market is that no one needs your car and most successful people that can stroke a check for this stuff can smell the BS without much trouble.

On the Giorgio platform, it is a new design and its prolonged gestation period was what cost Harald Wester his job as the head of Maserati and Alfa.

Well let me kindly point out that FCA has made enough money to pay off their remaining debt. So what ever they may be doing wrong they have to be doing something right. Jeep is gold from a marketing perspective. It has frankly been the engine that keeps FCA going. As for Alfa look for so many years Marchionne kept trying to resurrect Alfa on the cheap by using Fiat platforms. The Georgio platform that is the basis for the Giulia and Stelvio (which may have come from a cobbled old Mercedes platform) was engineered by Ferrari. It rides well. The turbo engine performs well. Most of the glitches that plagued the 2017 models(as a result of rushing to the market) have been eliminated. They still have to improve interior plastics and the cheap switches.Otherwise they have a good platform. The larger SUV is simply going to be an elongated Stelvio platform. The coupe is an easy no brainer and it competes directly with Mercedes, Audi, BMW.(Probably cheap to make) If you are going to make a profit you have to be SUV heavy. That's where the money is to be had. Ford obviously came to that conclusion. So the argument that Alfa should have gone down in range to 25K to 40 K range is simply not a profitable solution. I think they are in the right price range. They have to keep working on reliability and quality. They also need a smaller SUV to compete with the Jag E-Pace, the Audi Q3, the Volvo XC40 and BMW X1. Their turbo 4 cylinder has enough power to be their workhorse engine. Finally a word about Mercedes. If they had done such a great job with Chrysler perhaps they would have still owned them. The bottom line is the did not do a great job for Chrysler.Other than the 300 and Charger they were not able to improve on quality.Their only success was the 300 and Charger.

The Giorgio platform is a fresh design unrelated to previous Mercedes/Chrysler products.
