Did Rolls-Royce Debut The All-new Cullinan At The PERFECT Time To Make A Serious SPLASH?

Last week, big news rippled across the automotive industry. That's because the very first Rolls-Royce sport-utility vehicle debuted across the globe. It made international headlines.

And, it probably should. No one builds a vehicle like Roller.

While I think it's safe to say that the jury is still out regarding the Cullinan's looks, I am 90 percent confident that no other automaker will come close to making an SUV this luxurious. Although Rolls doesn't make a perfect automobile, it does a damn fine job making them as luxurious as possible.

From the options, to the type of leather used, to the fiber optic ceiling that looks like a starry night, to the ridiculous amount of excess, no one does it like Rolls. And that ethos carries on in the Cullinan.

With Rolls-Royce opting to debut the vehicle online and NOT at any major automotive event, this has us wondering: Is the marketing team really using its head? It has the perfect occasion to trot out its latest automobile.

The royal wedding happens this Saturday.

Imagine a white Cullinan chauffeuring Meghan Markle to the church as Prince Harry awaits his bride. It seems like it would be the most genius marketing move to give the Cullinan more attention than ever and forever cement its place in history for decades to come.

The existence of the Cullinan...no matter how (negatively/positively) polarizing for the brand - is the reason Land Rover could make a large/tall uber-luxury Range Rover-based sedan in the vein of their Mulsanne & Phantom cars.

The Cullinan is a tall-riding sedan-like SUV with awkward proportions. Reminds me earlier versions of the Range Rover.

Not sure why there is still a discussion about how the Cullinan looks. It's a shoebox with wheels lined with leather and wood — just like the RR cars. If you like those, you'll like the SUV. And that was the goal of the RR designers.

You would have a better chance seeing them riding in a Bentley. The House of Windsor has a mix of brands, but no Rollers from what I know. I have only seen them riding around in Land Rovers, Jaguars and Bentley Limos.

The Queen’s State fleet consists of three Rolls-Royces, three Daimlers and two Bentleys. The Two Bentleys are the newest and were custom made for Public occasions. THere are other Royal Fleet cars - including several Fords and VWs - and the Very First Bentley Bentayga was built for her - however her favorite vehicle over the years has been the Land Rover Discovery - of which she has had over 30.

FOr a while - all the cars she drives have bespoke interior fabrics chosen by her - and she does specify heated seats as well.

As far as the Cullinan - I would guess that there were enough pre-production orders to require several months - and maybe more than that - to just fill those orders. So - why would RR make a big splash -when being EXCLUSIVE is what they want to be?

Whether you like or dislike the Rolls Royce Cullinan (which seems to be sized perfectly - maybe a notch or two larger than the very small/too small Bentayga and the slightly small Range Rover), it bodes very well for the upcoming BMW X7.

If the BMW X7 is launched in this size, it will be a huge hit!

By the way, the person who buys/leases a Cullinan is not going to be some white, waspy, horsey folk - it will be the person who already owns one of those beautiful, albeit slightly gaudy $300K "Wraiths" - i.e. a male suburban entrepreneur or urban creative type or a pro sports type, probably unmarried maybe with no kids who will get their Cullinan and black out all the trim and cruise around with his Posse.

There will be lots of Cullinan's in Vegas, Miami, and LA and very few in places where there is actually snow (i.e. the water-based snow that comes frozen from the sky versus the kind that comes from Central American). RR might as well sell the thing with a $10,000 optional sterling silver gun rack!

Those are all very creative ways of saying "black", excepting the first.

All kinds of people will eat this up, just because it's expensive and an SUV. If you just typed those two words on a piece of paper, you could probably get people to put down a deposit.

Like most people who buy SUVs, they won't use it or need it. I'm continually mystified why people think they need an SUV, especially one that can truly off-road. But for what it is, and the target they're aiming to hit, the Cullinan is done well.

I kinda like it...in the sporty red motif. It doesn't remind me of anything else...until the X7 is debuted. Makes the Bentayga look even more of a derivative product from the VW parts shop.
