Audi Cripples Self Driving Features In US Bound Flagship Model

Audi recently announced pricing for the V6-equipped A8, arriving in dealerships this fall for the rock-bottom price of $83,800. Alright, so that’s not exactly chump change, but Audi promised tech that would embarrass practically everything else on the road — including the Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

In some markets, it seems as if the brand will deliver on those promises. The sedan is practically dripping with technology, including the impressive-sounding Traffic Jam Pilot. The system offers a claimed hands-free experience at speeds below 37 mph, as the vehicle can crawl in heavy traffic without the need of a driver. You’ll still need to turn it off and take over in urban environments but, so long as it’s a relatively straight shot, the car will do all the work.

Unintended acceleration...

creating cheat software for TDIs with Bosch...

The last thing Audi needs is yet another crippling series of lawsuits.

We all know what the reason for the unintended acceleration was.
And it had nothing to do with the car.

Darn. I was waiting for this Audi and the bells and whistles. I am so looking forward to lazy driving. So instead I guess I'll be looking at the fully dressed out AMG E63S. If I can't be lazy I might as well go fast.

For decades - Audi was not really a top premium product - it was a second tier competing with Volvo and Buick - and now that VW has decided to ATTEMPT to move their product upmarket - they have priced their products too high.

While it is nice to hear that the A8 has all the technical stuff - but as we know - that means it will be beta testing on the first buyers - and Audi has a poor reputation for reliability -and as a result - their LARGER offerings do not sell well outside of Germany. In addition - they continue to style the A8 in a manner to make it look SMALLER than the other cars in its class - it just fails to have the presence of a real S-Class competitor. Along with outrageous prices for repair parts - It has nothing that would have me buy it over a Mercedes.

BMW & Mercedes have had this self driving in slow speed for years in US. For BMW, it’s called traffic something and for Mercedes, it’s part of the higher distronic+ feature. My coworker that has a S550e brags about it and uses it every morning to work.

It's not just Audi, Nissan did not bring the self-park features either though they did push forward with the somewhat benign Propilot.

Audi is still smarting over that unintended acceleration fiasco from the 80's

Problem is that Americans save money on driver education, investing it in lawsuits instead.

@Hauerg I have to agree on that statement.
