AAA Study Indicates Trust In Self Driving Technology Is Fading After High Profile Crashes

Americans' distrust of self-driving cars has increased these past few months, according to AAA. The national motor club blames recent crashes involving autonomous cars and vehicles with related technology for the downturn in consumer trust.

In its most recent survey of consumer attitudes toward self-driving cars, AAA found that 73 percent of Americans would be too afraid to ride in one. That's up 63 percent from AAA's last survey, conducted in late 2017. This time around, 63 percent of respondents also said they would feel less safe sharing the road with an autonomous car while walking or riding a bicycle.

Self-driving technology is the solution in search of a problem. The "safety-nannies" have their place (auto braking = good; lane-keeping assist = good; etc) but it is way too early to turn over autonomous functions to drivers.

Why? All so the morons can look at Instagram and text their friends while driving.

Its the USA - I wouldn't be surprised if during the next democratic administration, the govt passes a law requiring human drivers behind the wheel of any operating motor vehicle. Do the math - once self-driving is possible, there will be lots of drivers out of work. This is an issue that socialist democrats can rally behind.

Self driving technology has already so many possible uses that only a blind person would not see them.

Obviously - one would be if they could replace professional drivers with software - FAR less expensive and no benefits - but the companies would reap major rewards. Yes - this would eliminate millions of jobs - but Automation has already done that elsewhere. (Taxi - trucking - etc)

The same is true that Americans are living longer - and Autonomous vehicles would allow them mobility after the time they cannot or prefer not to drive themselves.

As far as I can see - the benefits to those things would go to the RICH conservatives who own and run companies - not the Middle class democrats who would LOSE their jobs.

The solutions to the problem have existed for a long time, they are called better roads and better traffic laws enforcement. Both of these are getting worse and no technology can accommodate for that.

Long story short: Tesla rushed the technology before it was ready much less adequately tested --ditto for Uber--and they have set acceptance back a decade.

Autonomous technology should be outlawed until the technology is ready.

Tesla and Uber's argument is that the only way to adequately develop and test the technology was to put it in the real world in the hands of real people. Their argument is also that the technology is already much safer than average and it has gotten better as a result of the real-world exposure in a way that would not be possible or feasible in a lab. The regulators have agreed and have allowed them to do so.
