Betcha Can't Guess What Is Now The Top Selling Luxury Sport Sedan In California
The BMW 3-series was, for many years, not only the top-selling sports sedan in the United States but the top-selling luxury-brand car. Recently, it has been supplanted by the Mercedes-Benz C-class. But in electric-car-eager California, both are now being outsold by the Tesla Model 3.

According to the California New Car Dealers Association (CNCDA), citing IHS Markit registration data in its first-quarter newsletter, the Model 3 tops the quarterly sales rankings in the Near Luxury Class, with 3723 new-vehicle registrations in the Golden State from the start of the year through the end of March, versus 3323 for the C-class and 3260 for the 3-series.

Yup, and when they are profitable by the end of the year, it will be "well they missed profitability for 10 years." They are the company to beat, whether you see it now or five years from now. Detroit thinks like you do, and that is why in the end traditional makes are screwed.

Quite a stretch there..it is hardly a sport sedan. Going fast in a straight line hardly qualifies. Going fast whilst keeping in one piece might help. But I doubt it.

It doesn't just go fast in a straight line, read/watch ANY of the reviews. The handling is exceptional, probably the most praised feature of the car.

1 - It is not a sports sedan - It certainly does not give that impression when you get into one - it is a CHEAP looking sedan

2 - The Model 3 - is NOT a premium sedan as well - it is ENTRY level - not even middle premium - if it was sold on a truly open market -they would never justify the price of the cheap looking car.

Now - if you want to compare it - compare it to a Toyota Corolla - and entry level compact car. THAT is where it belongs - not any higher.

Performance, range, and functionality are on a different level. It's closest competitor is the BMW 330 or A4.

The Tesla Model 3 is just SO HOT that it CAN'T BE STOPPED!

(....or perhaps its inability to stop comes from its faulty brakes!)

And the combined wallop of electrification by Audi, VW, Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Ford, GM, Toyota, Honda...will have ZERO impact, I'm sure.

What wallop do you speak of? Because their electrification efforts so far have fallen flat on their stomach, beaten with an ugly stick called the Prius Prime.

No worries, I'm for all electric cars. Pay attention to the trajectory, not only to the cumulative numbers. At double or triple the price for a Tesla with a limited distribution market you'd think that Nissan would have sold a lot more Leafs/eNV200 etc. They haven't, but at least they have been trying. What's the rest of the industry doing? Tesla Killer concepts?

The new Leaf is an excellent car, my coworker just got one and it blows away the original in every way. However, it is no Model 3 and the sales will show that. Even at 10k/mo, the Model 3 will trounce it with the current production rate.

The Model 3 doesn't compete with the Fusion. It competes with the 3 Series and C Class - which it is handily outselling. Get over it.

@runninglogan1 You're a dumb ass who misses the point. So here it is: the Model 3 isn't aimed at the C Class and 3 Series. Thus comparing it to them is as nonsensical as asserting that the Fusion competes with them.

The Model 3 is supposed to be the average man's affordable EV at $35K, but none are available at that price. The Model 3 is PRICED more like a Mercedes C Class, but it's execution is more like a base Fusion. The target of the Model 3 was the CamCord, i.e. everyday sedan. The irony is that the CamCords and Fusions of the world have far better build quality and nicer interiors for half the price of a typical Model 3.

I was in Cupertino a few days ago and saw a Model 3. It was horrific for build quality.

Tesla is benchmarking all versions of the Model 3 against BMW 3-series variants. It was never to designed to go after the Fusion and likely never will. Autonomous rides will decimate entry-level car sales--Tesla doesn't need to go any lower than the Model 3.

Of course they are benchmarking the 3 Series AFTER THE FACT given that the promise of a $35K EV affordable EV alternative to the CamCord is now a $60K machine that is cruder than a base Chevy Rentabu. If you scroll back in Tesla's propaganda--OOPS PR--Musk very aggressively promised a $35K wonder car EV for the masses aimed at the mainstream sedan buyer.

The base $35k version will be out in 2019 I think. You can get a $35k 3-series as well, the difference is that the cost per mile will be way less on the Tesla, bringing it more realistically in the $25-30k range over a 4-5 year period. This is with no rebates.

It's not just being BEV, its the innovative interior, no middle man sales, over the air software updates, and the cross-country charging network. The only thing being matched here is the charging network that VAG was forced to build.

Name one significant luxury car feature in its pier group that the Model 3 does not have. The aesthetics are controversial (for now until all other cars look this way), but functionality wise I think it has everything you will find in a 3-series and then some.
