New LandCruiser to debut Toyota V8 turbo-diesel?

Bruce Newton at drive.com.au just reported on Toyota's next-generation LandCruiser, caught testing in southern Europe. Although there was the usual heaping helping of black disguise cladding (do they celebrate Halloween in Europe?), the new model's more rounded styling shown through. The newer LandCruiser certainly looks larger than the current model too, despite the slump in large SUV sales and projections. But even though gas price hikes have put a scare in the market, Toyota has an ace up its sleeve. A diesel V8.

A powerful V8 turbo-diesel engine is expected to be one of the available powerplants, a first for Toyota. With a displacement of 4.5 liters and a pair of turbochargers, it should be good for more than 200kW (268 hp) and, 650Nm (479 ft-lbs.) of torque. That's a huge improvement over the current I6, which rates 151/357. This new V8 may make its way under the hood of the Tundra, rumor has it. A new Aisin six-speed automatic transmission should also appear on this SUV. And while it will be bigger than the current 'Cruiser, weight is expected to hold steady around the current model's 2710kg (5975 lbs). The LandCruiser replacement will be a body-on-frame with double-wishbone front and live axle rear-end to continue the tradition of outstanding off-road ability.

Great.Looks like toyota is having a lot of Great ALL-NEW engines up its sleeve.
The new V8's:4.6l,5.0l,5.7l and now the 4.5l diesel.And soon the LF-A and IS500 V8s and V10.
Toyota will be on a roll once all these cars debut.

sick, I've always loved landcrusiers, just thought they were overpriced and underpowered. This will surely be one of the last "true" suv's, especially from a Japanese carmaker, who have all turned to crossovers

268 hp? that is crap for a 4.5.
bmw get 270 from a 3.0 tt diesel. don't say "torque", because that little 3.0 diesel has 413 lb/ft, not that much less than the 479 of this giant 4.5.

i did say it was less. but if toyota wants to market this vehicle at all in europe, it needs to be more economical, lighter and smaller. and be more powerful, slight oxymoron i know, but with 4.5 i expect at least 300 hp.
toyota do have what we call the land cruiser here (like a 4runner i think) which is smaller and more economical, but still handles like a boat, is damn heavy (we don't like body on frame here), looks odd, is slow, has outdated technology, and has silly side folding rear seats. we want our suvs to have at least a hint of sportiness. i'm amazied they sell any LCs here at all actually.

Yes, that looks like a fairly weakling diesel. More than 325 hp and over 500 pounds of torque are what the competition has.

Ford, Dodge and GM all have huge V8 diesels that make 350+hp and 600+ ft/lb with around 6.6 liters and with a simple reprogrammer can manage 500+ hp and between 750 & 1,000 ft/lb.
