California Debuts $700 Electronic License Plate - How Long Until The Consumer Is Saddled With These?

California’s dramatic new license plate is hitting the streets — a digital display board that allows changeable messages controlled by the driver or remotely by fleet managers.

The new plates use the same computer technology as Kindle eBook readers, along with a wireless communication system.

They come with their own computer chips and battery.

Motorists who choose to buy the plate can register their vehicles electronically and eliminate the need to physically stick tags on their plates each year. They also may be able to display personal messages — if the DMV decides to allow that.

yup, gps is included, i mean you want to know when your car is stolen right... because the gps already in your car can;t directly be tracked by law enforcement.

$700? This should be free. Think about it, if there is a registration lapse they can just put a message saying "pull me over." This is a little too Orwellian for me.

Why would anyone pay for this?

An electronic license plate should reduce cost not increase it. California already has RIDICULOUS vehicle licensing fees.

Why do people pay property taxes as well?

If they make it a requirement for driving a car in California - the only real option otherwise would be to move out of the state.

Bringing up property taxes only proves my point even more as it relates to California.

The only real option is to get rid of the socialist-communist Gestapo in Sacramento that takes the #5 economy in the world and is perpetually running out of money and teetering on bankruptcy.

Matt. Not so sure about socialist/communist as that system is supposed to spread the wealth. California, to outsiders, looks like more like the wealthy elite and top 10% wanting to rule over the rest of the population. To them $700 is chump change but to average family it's a lot. Yet it will likely get dictated for the whole state.
