Midengined Corvette May Have 1000HP Powertrain In The Pipeline
The worst kept secret in Detroit these days is the existence of the mid-engined Corvette, aka the C8. Everyone, and we mean literally everyone, knows it’s coming, likely in 2019. Spy shots, leaked details and the outright refusal of GM’s top brass to even discuss the car on the record are all clear indicators. Corvette chief engineer Tadge Juechter only smiled and put his finger to his lips when asked by this writer at Detroit last January for any details.

Personally, I don't buy into the "ultimate horsepower" angle. Today's Ferraris are impeccable cars with a lot less that 1000 hp. Most Porsches are below 500 hp, and they're noteworthy.

Clearly, bragging about HP does not necessarily make a car super. Mind you, it might make it mighty appealing to the Tiny Todger Club ;-)

It's much better to brag incessantly about MPG because that's totally different.

Let's hope the car buzz renderings are not accurate. That would be one ugly Fiero.

@MD- From all the spy shots I would say the rendering is very likely what is coming down the pipe. Personally, I would not have done this car. I would have gone the route of a Corvette SUV and sports sedan myself. It would attract some hate, but could do some great things for the brand and its bottom line.

If this is accurate then the Corvette is dead. No one will pay $100K for something that ugly. $200K+ m-a-y-b-e but not $100K.

As supercar for the rest of us -Corvette has made a number of firsts over the years - and although I do not see a GM engine with that capability out there right now -If GM does have one - bring it on - ALONG with the Ciel and the El Miraj too.

Then you're not paying attention to ample reports of the new V8 that will go into the Corvette and Cadillac. GM has also discussed the engine openly.

GM/Ford/Chrysler has had (in the past 15yrs) the tech capability to develop engines comparable to Bugatti/Porsche/Ferrari/Lambo/etc.

It's about the product packaging, relevancy to existing/potential customers, & if they can make the vehicle "at a price the consumers will accept". If the pricing is too high, they'd get dinged for over-pricing mainstream vehicles - no matter how well they perform vs luxury or performance-focused competition.
