Jeep, Alfa Romeo And Fiat Join Legions Skipping Paris Motor Show

As the industry shifts to online showings and private debuts, and the cost for a large auto show stand regularly reaches into the millions, more automakers are deciding to forgo these events entirely. Most recently Lamborghini said it would be skipping the Paris Motor Show, and before that BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Now one of the world’s largest auto groups is doing the same with three of its core brands.

Fiat, Alfa Romeo, and Jeep will not be in attendance at this year’s Paris Motor Show, according to a report from the website AutoPlus France. This is the first major show in years that either of the three automakers have decided to skip. Fiat suggests that auto shows are no longer a must do as part of its ongoing strategy. Though three of FCA’s core properties won’t be in attendance, its mainstay luxury marque, Maserati, will be there, as will Ferrari.

In rumors elsewhere, Marchionne is expected to call for Fiat leaving the USA and China as a brand and for Chrysler to disappear completely. Alfa Romeo and Maserati will be folded into one division. Dodge will be the volume brand for cars.

I have heard the exact same thing and my understanding is that he will be announcing this tomorrow June 1st.I have to say that while he may have saved Fiat back in 2004 with his contract with GM and his golden opportunity to purchase Chrysler in 2009 for virtually nothing he has not done a very good job with car product in general. First making Alfa's with Fiat platforms hurt the brand. When he brought Fiat to America in 2012 there was no 4 door 500. The 500 L being manufactured in Poland was a cheaper way to go but obviously did nothing positive for reliability. Even the 500X is too small and was saddled with FCA's lousy 9 speed tranny for the AWD models. The only hope for Alfa is that Trump is clearly against Germany and its imported cars. If he puts a 25 to 30% tariff on the German car makers Alfa is going to seem like its a bargain basement deal.

Recently I had to pick my next turn-and-burn company car and I looked at the Giulia and the Stinger. Drove both. I liked the Stinger better for looks. Performance for the price is far better in the Stinger as will be reliability. So I'm now driving a pretty blue, fully-optioned Stinger GT. I cannot help but think that the RWD H/K platform would make some great Dodges and yes better than the Giulia.

So who is left attending the auto show at the French Toast capital of Europe?

The real question is why would any company want to be a part of something that is screaming for terrorists to attack it? Given Europe's "there are no Muslim terrorists" approach to immigration and their "so send them all in" attitude, I'd not want to attract victims to the venue.
