EU Freaking Out Over Possible 25% Import Tax To US Market

Wirtschaftswoche reports that the comments, made to Macron and reported to the media via several EU and US diplomats, could spark a trade war between the US and the EU, with Germany’s car industry being a heavy source of income to the union.

Trump has been outspoken in his tirades against the car industry, first taking aim at domestic brands that import into the US from Mexico, then at European countries’ appetite for domestic car brands over US ones.

Hey European automakers: Don't sweat it about #45's policy of the hour. US Policy changes like the wind nowadays. Latest thing: #45 is concerned about saving jobs in China.

The way things are shaping up on this side of the pond, we can always hope that President Pence will be more stable in this respect.

What are the likely outcomes here?

1. Europe responds by reducing import tariffs on American cars that no one in Europe wants to buy anyway since they have many better options? or
2. Europe raises tariffs on other American imports where it will hurt?

I'm going to guess 2, followed by a global recession and a decimation of many US exporters the President claims he wants to help.

ignorance is bliss. People will back Trump for his nationalist sentiment. Shades of Pied Piper leading down the path to nowhere

The problem is what defines a imported car anymore, how much of the car has to be from the US to be consider a domestic? Is the BMW X5 and import, is the Camry an import? Whats the criteria?

Maybe the idiots in Europe will see that their greedy unions and socialist captors need to be overthrown.

since EU has had a 4x the US tariff, why not start with a 4x their tariff, or 40%.

Why doesn't Trump just create a state run car company and resurrect the Lada name? They could call the flagship model a Lada MAGA. I'm sure Putin would let him have the rights for a steal. It would fit right in with the Soviet-style auto market he's envisioning for America. Maybe they could feature unregulated diesels running on coal tar. It would be a win for America (mileage may vary in California).

This is what the president really wants.

I'm sure all you alt-right "car lovers" around here are going to be thrilled.

Look-The Donald does not want us to drive BMW', Mercedes, Audi and Volkswagen. He rather we drive GM, Ford, FCA only. Soon an Audi A3 will start at 80K. The cheapest Porsche will start at 150K. Maybe if we proclaim our allegiance to Russia and Putin we will get the special Trumpian discount.

hope someone shared with him that plenty of foreign manufacturers employ Americans in mostly red states now or is that too much to swallow ? albeit at really low wages

Take 2: Hate the man if you must, but love his policies. Not yet sure about these tariffs myself but wouldn't bet against POTUS just yet. Unemployment way down, economy up, stock market up, taxes down, money in middle class pockets, NK coming to the table, ISIS on the run, Iran cornered, etc. Who would have thunk? Lets see how this plays out before snapping to judgement.

The most that can be said for Trump is that he hasn't screwed up the economy he inherited yet. That said my stock performance this year has been much more anemic than last. His constant rattling of the markets with tariff talk and his general instability hasn't helped. It's a bit much to hear conservatives swoon over tariffs which are taxes and will be paid by Americans either directly in increased costs of imported goods or higher costs for less efficiently produced domestic goods. This is the crudest form of "industrial policy" which conservatives have railed about for years.
