2018 Audi Rs5 - Can A Turbo V6 Be The Answer In Catching BMW And Mercedes?
Audi is not a brand we associate with weakness. But with its performance models rare cracks have been known to appear. The R8 remains the closest anyone has come to beating the Porsche 911 at its own game in the last 50 years. That it came from a brand associated with upscale sedans and SUVs is all the more impressive. And yet when it comes to creating convincing rivals for BMW M and Mercedes-AMG out of its core range, Audi still seems to struggle.

If I were Audi, I'd make the turbo V6 available in the A5 at a very attractive price and sell more units and it would. Although the A5 is less attractive than the first one, it is still presentable. A big power infusion would help sales. As much an A5 costs, why does it have a 2.0T and why do you have to go to an S5 or an RS5 to get the good stuff?

The S5 is exactly what you are asking for, it is merely an A5 with the turbo V6

And a massive price increase. Thus it is NOT what I am asking for.

As sedans and coupes plummet in sales, the way to keep margin is to put the good stuff out at a lower price. The $12K basic difference between an A5 and an S5 is largely due to optioning. Put the big engine in the cheaper model and sales will go up.

RS5 is fantastic. A beautiful GT alternative to the more hardcore M4 and C63S.

Putting the V6 in the A5 would be a mistake. Few people choose a six cylinder nowadays and the turbo four is plenty quick for 90% of people.

These are intentionally lower volume models and they serve their purpose well.

I see very few of the new generation A5/S5 coupe, mostly A5 Sportbacks. I think Audi really sabotaged the coupe by watering down what was a truly stunning design (2008-2012 model). So I don't think it matters what drvietrain it has. Audi should look to build out the Sportback line.
