Model 3 Delays Take A Toll - 23% Of Reservation Holders Have Been Issued A Refund
Tesla has an incredible amount of Model 3 reservations, but the delays and unavailability of the less expensive version of the vehicle have resulted in some cancellations.

A report is now attempting to quantify the number of cancellation and claims that as many as 23% of Model 3 reservations were refunded by Tesla, but people are still reserving the Model 3 at a high pace.

The report comes via Second Measure, which analyzes billions of anonymized purchases from credit and debit cards.

Losing 115K units is horrific

I saw the first one in this area parked in a lot. People were swarming all over it just to get a glimpse - and these were average men and women, all ages. I can't imagine another vehicle drawing this kind of attention - certainly I've never observed that before.

Then you tell them it's $60K not the $35K Tesla promised and they lose interest.

Actually - that happened to me - quite a few years ago. I was lucky enough to get one of the first Mercury Sable Station Wagons (WHen the Taurus/Sable first came out) - before official release date - and I drove it to Williamsburg for the weekend - I had reservations at the Williamsburg Lodge - and when we entered to sign in - the car was immediately converged upon by dozens of people - who literally followed it around all weekend. I would suggest that the same thing happens when any really new vehicle comes to town.

So the Model 3 is the Mercury Sable wagon of the EV world. Good to know.

Next time I guess I'll video it so I can prove it to some hack on the internet who hides behind a fake name and whines like a schoolgirl in every Tesla article.

Most people here are not using their legal names....

Actually - using another name is NOT illegal. It is only that when you do so to cover up an illegal intent. YOU are probably referring to their Birth Name.

Lots of people have used "changed" names over the years for various purposes. I have a friend who has a 13 letter Last name that has no "English" vowels in it (It does have "y"s - but he shortened it to something others can actually pronounce.

Anyone who doesn't want to spend $60,000 on an electric Hyundai Elantra (i.e. a Tesla Model 3) should get a refund.

I am willing to consider making a wager that ZERO Tesla Model 3's with a sticker under $50,000 will be produced. That stupid, stuck-up, self-important, cardboard front license plate that adorns new Tesla's that says "Zero-Emmissions" should be replaced with one that says "Zero Cheap Teslas".

I suspect that if you wanted to spend $60,000 on a Model 3, you could have one in two months.

So Tesla has a backlog of orders and you guys think they should build and sell the cheaper, lower margin cars first?

Did you know the base price of a Mercedes E class is 52,950? Yet the cheapest one you can find on a dealer lot is about 62. How come?

MDarringerMDarringer - 6/4/2018 4:27:53 PM

The 500K in reservations result was predicated on the $35K price. What Tesla is doing is deceptive advertising and bait and switch.

Carlos, do you want a base E Class? Three in stock as we speak.

It is not that issue.

The issue is- they took deposits on ALL versions of the Car. AND only now does he admit that they are only producing the most expensive versions because it they produced the cheaper ones - they would not survive. One would expect - when making a deposit - that it put you in a que line - and they would be produced in order of the deposits received.

That is wrong, the 500k deposits were predicated on a starting price of $35k. Several surveys have proven that people signing up were planning on spending $45-50k and up with upgrades. This was always positioned as a premium midsize like the BMW 3-series or A4.

I saw my first two recently, one on the road and another on a flatbed. The shape of the car is very similar to a BMW 3-Series Gran Turismo, a car most people don’t like the look of. We’ll see how long it takes for the “ooooh is that a Tesla Model 3???” novelty to wear off.

Wait 6 months and there will be Model 3s everywhere in North America. Another 12 months, it will be everywhere on earth. Tesla drivers and investors will have the last laugh.

And the shedding of reservations -- rather than conversion to orders -- has not ended. With an optimistic 2 years until the last of the current reservation-holders gets their Model 3, you can bet the pipeline will thin over time.

At first it confused me how low knowledge, MAGA posters could be all-in on Trump, while at the same time hating on an American company like Tesla and acting as the in-house PR department for Kia.

But then I remembered that these same Trump supporters are also ludites, so it makes some sense they would fear electric cars and gravitate back to the 1960's technology with which they grew up.

Honestly, studying these imbeciles would be an interesting experiment if not for the real world damage they are doing.
