With Apple And Android Now Handling In Dash Navigation Is There A Need For The Factory NAV Option?

Apple CarPlay will allow drivers to use third-party mapping apps later this year, ending current arrangements that force CarPlay users to make do solely with Apple Maps for their route guidance needs.

The situation will change when Apple’s new iPhone operating system – iOS 12 – launches, bringing with it the ability to use third-party mapping when in CarPlay mode.

of course there's a need for manufacturer equipped non-cellular based navigation!

No and $2500-3500 for a "Tech Package" is ridiculous especially when it takes 15 minutes to enter an address. Save the $$$ for nicer leather or sport exhaust.

Unless I'm in a totally unknown place, I always know where I'm going so I rarely use any nav stuff.

As long as the vehicle has a reasonably sized screen, even without nav, then I could see the factory units falling out of favor. If it wasn't so ridiculously expensive to update the maps on in-car units, it might be more attractive. But since the maps available on the phone are always more up to date than the car maps, it's a tough sell.

Also, don't forget that with some mapping programs on the phone you can download the map while at home on your WI-FI and don't have to use your data while driving.

Since I got my new car with Android Auto and Waze, I have not used the factory nav. Waze is far superior with traffic and police alerts.

What a shock. We all figured you for a world traveler who has experienced many different cultures, and not just some yahoo from SoCal who lives in a tiny bubble.

Actually - even though I spend a lot of time in cars - I also use a NAV very infrequently - I find it much easier to plan ahead and get directions before I leave - although I have used it to when traffic became a problem a few times. THe Nav on my Chrysler Min-Van - has probably never been used after two years. I use it basically for trips I have been regularly making for dozens of years - and I do not even need a map (Paper - what's that) in the car although I do still have a Road Atlas in every car I buy too.

I would miss the integration with my HUD

I haven't used my factory Nav in 2 years. I use WAZE. Takes 30 seconds to enter a destination versus sometimes over a minute with the clunky factory interface. The map data is always current and I get real-time alerts. It's no contest.
