The NEXT Big Thing? Tesla's Model Y Gets Teased With A 2020 Debut

Set to share many of its parts with the Model 3 sedan, the Model Y will essentially be a smaller version of the Model X and aim to become the most affordable, all-electric crossover on the market.

This latest teaser image, as with one published last year, shows that the Model Y will adopt a familiar Tesla look and make do without conventional wing mirrors. Additionally, we can see that the crossover will have a more upright and pronounced front fascia than current Tesla models. A very short front overhang is also visible alongside large wheels.

I predict a lot of enthusiasm from the posters here, a number of guys planning to plunk down deposits, some guesses as to the presence or absence of 'Falcon Doors', and probably one commenter telling us he'd rather have a Kia Sorento.

Ridiculous vaporware. Tesla doesn't even have a factory to build this car. No use discussing products that are 2-3 years away in the best case scenario.

They can't build the Model 3 competently. Supposedly they are building a semi any minute now. Model S and X desperately need restyling. But, hey Model Y here we go.

This remains a matter of economics - TESLA cannot make a profit selling the Model 3 at the "suggested" price and their more expensive models are aging - so they need replacements that will. Without high profit cars - Tesla would already be history.

@tomm the model y is a small suv...will o my be marginally more expensive than the model 3. If they can’t make the model 3 prfofitably then there is something very wrong with their process. The car has the fit/finish and material levels of a $25k Hyundai. Throw in a extra 10k (very generous) differential between a ice power train and theirs and they should be pretty profitable at their price points.

I finally drove one today and the fit/finish was mostly good, performance and handling were amazing, seats are very comfortable and up there with luxury makes. I did notice some issues like a rear headrest that was off center, so it wasn't flawless but definitely better than a Hyundai (and my Sonata 2.0T). The center screen takes some getting used to as well.

2020 is optimistic unless they decide to only build in China, which would be counter to the last statements that were made. Based on the investor event, they will be announcing the Shanghai factory in 1-2 months. Oh, and no plans to raise money in Q3 or Q4.
