Saudi Arabia Begins Issuing Women Drivers Licenses Ahead Of Official Date
Saudi Arabia is the only country in the world to have a ban on women drivers, and that is changing this month. On Monday, 10 Saudi women were issued drivers licenses. This marked a milestone in government policies as there had been a ban on women driving in the country for decades.

Saudi women who already had internationally recognized driver’s licenses from the U.S., U.K., and Canada were issued the first licenses in the country according to the official Saudi Press Agency. The women took a driving and eye exam at the General Department of Traffic in the capital city of Riyadh.

Would I be Captain Obvious in saying: It's about frickin' time!

In related news, The Holy Church of Rome recently declared that Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) was correct in his understanding that the planets, including Earth, orbit the sun, rather than orbiting Earth. Um... sorry for the excommunication, and threats of torture and death stuff.

Please note that the Bible still says that women are worth about 1/2 of what a man is worth - women should be silent and submissive to men - have NO power or authority over men - and women should not speak in Churches or Temples. It includes directions on how to properly sell your daughter into slavery - and also includes instructions that if a young unmarried woman is raped by a single man - they must MARRY and never get divorced. Such is the word of "gods".

However - Solomon did have 700 wives and 300 concubines - I don't think I could have withstood that!

Our two resident progressive "liberals" reach a new low for the site. How do these comments relate to the article? Their comments show their true colors. So much for "liberal" equating to freedom and respect for others who may think differently.

@Vette71 asks “…How do these comments relate to the article?…”

Saudi Arabia is governed by conservative Muslim law. Wherever conservative region takes on the form of law, the culture becomes resistant to change. Google the definition of “conservative” and you’ll find:

- [verb] holding to traditional attitudes and values and cautious about change or innovation, typically in relation to politics or religion (syn: traditionalist, traditional, conventional, orthodox, old-fashioned, dyed-in-the-wool, hidebound, unadventurous, set in one's ways)

- [noun] a person who is averse to change and holds to traditional values and attitudes, typically in relation to politics

My opening comment (starts with “Would I be Captain Obvious…”) shows how it took until 2018 for Saudi Arabia to allow women to drive, something that was common in America, the UK, Canada, and much of the Western World for over 70 years! Yeah, nearly a century behind the times, thanks to conservative religious doctrine.

I also highlight that it took literally centuries – about 400 years!!! – for the Holy Church of Rome (AKA The Roman Catholic Church), another conservative religious organization that once ruled much of the world by law, to conclude that they were “mistaken” for persecuting Galileo as a heretic for his teachings that Earth was not the center of the universe. Official church doctrine at the time decreed that the heavenly bodies circled the Earth.

Perhaps it’s time for you to hit the books?

@colecole: You're right about Switzerland. Every able-bodied male, age 18 to 50-something, is an obligatory member of the Swiss military. They do their mandatory duty (a few years) when they are young, and then they are available, and they partake in military training and exercises (a few weeks each year) throughout their adult life.

Each of these trained Swiss males has an automatic rifle and ammunition in their home (in a locked vault), because by law, they may be called into active military duty at any time. They are, in essence, "on call soldiers" for most of their life.

And yet Switzerland is very safe! They have very little crime overall, no poverty, and virtually no gun crime, in spite of being "armed to the teeth"!

So, what's the difference between safe, heavily-armed Switzerland and heavily-armed America, who is No.1 in firearm deaths per capita of all at-peace nations (even when excluding deaths caused by peace officers while acting in the line of duty)?

1. The Swiss are trained, and have spent years in active military duty as part of growing up. US gun culture means virtually anyone can own a firearm. In many locales, you can legally own a handgun before you're old enough to vote or drink booze\ or rent a car.

2. The Swiss have a strong sense of personal accountability. The US has the highest number of lawyers per capita. Even more than the next 5 nations combined! The US has a prevalent "not my fault", blaming, externalizing mindset. That's not good when combined with firearms.

3. In the US, there is a widespread "John Wayne mindset." You don't walk away from a fight. That's not manly. You don't get mad, you get even. Or better still, you teach the other(s) a lesson they'll never forget. This gets ugly when you combine this mentality with a gun culture in which virtually anyone can have a firearm, or multiple firearms.

This is the face of America.

Actually - that is another Trump LIE - JonesHamilton
In fact - New York City has more strict gun control laws than Chicago -as does all of Connecticut - and many other places
AND - Chicago does not appear on the TOP 30 list of Murder rate cities in the USA as well. In fact - most of the cities on that list are in areas where guns are readily available

@TomM Chicago as the murder capitol of the world is not a Trump lie. It's a fact. The situation in Chicago was discussed at length during the Obama administration as an obvious failure of Liberal policy.

Tom, if you're so certain it's a lie, go drive you minivan through a Chicago ghetto and report back.

Are you all racist, sexist or just plain stupid? Just because a culture is not like your own doesn't make it wrong. Just because people don't look like you or have the same money as you doesn't make them beneath you. I wish you all would have served in the Marines with me so your eyes could have been open to the outside world.

I would suggest instead getting your news from a myriad of sources and trying to obtain some semblance of a balanced worldview. But recognizing that the truth lies somewhere in the middle requires some intelligence and maturity, and you've not demonstrated that you have either.

The news. I didn't have an issue with it as a child. Or in high school. Or in graduate school. Or while working as a professional. Only when those who don't like the truth or the facts i.e. trickle down economics is a big lie, did the idea that the news could not be trusted start to grow. A rumour started by people who wanted their view of the world to carry the day. And by and large it remains an American construct.

@CANADIANCOMMENTS, if you want to understand the Daffy mind, the following quote shines a spotlight on it brilliantly! So much so, that it instantly triggers The Trumpflake Faithful. Confrontation with facts does that to them. It's consistent with what you said.

_____

"Donald Trump, champion and avatar of the shallow state, has won power because his supporters are threatened by what they don't understand, and what they don't understand is almost everything. Indeed, from evolution to data about our economy to the science of vaccines to the threats we face in the world, they reject vast subjects rooted in fact in order to have reality conform to their worldviews. They don't dig for truth; they skim the media for anything that makes them feel better about themselves. To many of them, knowledge is not a useful tool but a cunning barrier elites have created to keep power from the average man and woman."

- David Rothkopf
Professor of International Relations and Political Science

You got facts? So what? Daffies got denial (AKA Head in the sand), deflection (AKA No!!!! YOU'RE triggered!!!!), Whatabout-ism, "alternative facts" (AKA lies; BS they make up or repeat), and derision. Those are their "strengths." I've found there is no point in even talking with them. It's like they're from another planet... one where truth and facts don't matter.

Best wishes on "tryna talk some sense to 'em." :-D
