Musk Reveals New Tesla Roadster Will Have Insane SpaceX Performance Option
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has revealed that the next-generation Roadster will have a “SpaceX option package” that will upgrade the all-electric supercar’s performance to even higher levels.

Speaking during Tesla’s 2018 Annual Shareholder Meeting, Musk addressed the room full of investors that range and performance of the Tesla Semi and Roadster prototypes that were unveiled last November will be even better in the final production version. “In particular, the Tesla Roadster. What we unveiled with the Roadster was the base model performance. It’s going to have a SpaceX options package. It’s crazy,” said Musk.

Not surprising. He already promised the moon, might as well promise the sun too while he’s at it.

Con artists don't deliver on what they promise, pretty sure the only reason he can't keep up with output is due to overwhelming DEMAND.

Humm... I would think this is classic, "change the conversation", Shouldn't Tesla figure out how to build and profit from Model 3 before they combine Musks Space X company into the conversation about a product well in the future?? Is all we get from Automotive Executives PR, spin?? starting to sound allot like Aston Martin and all their bold proclamations about the future, while obscuring the current state of disaster... the model 3 is in.. Just wondering how the next generation of cars is relevant to losing gobs of money on everything they do now.

Reaching for the stars...LOL. This is nothing more than Elon Musk's shameless self promotion...what does a high performance package for a car have to do with spacex?

What a shock! The ludite convention is in full force!

Seriously, what the hell is wrong with you guys? You ooh and aah over every new version of the Dodge Challenger (they make 23 as far as I can tell, all of which suck), but this Tesla Roadster which looks and sounds incredible suddenly draws the "no running in the halls" responses I expect from a high school cafeteria monitor.

If you don't want to see cool concept cars, maybe stick to the Chevy website?

I finally saw it in person at the investor event and it looks insanely good. Hope it makes it to production in 2020.

When I said 'sounds', I was referring to the description of it, like when an economy car buyer describes a Kia, and one of our members here says "Wow, that sounds cool".

What's to spin? It's a cool concept car on a site that is based on showing cool concept cars.

Will it make it to production? I predict yes, but if it doesn't it will be one of many such concepts we've seen in here through the years that you guys all oohed and aahed over. El Miraj, anyone?

Well he may not deliver on time, but based on the S performance I imagine a small roadster's performance will be insane. Look forward to seeing it, hopefully sooner rather than later.

0-60 in 1.9s, top speed over 250 mph, 620+ miles of range.

Did I say 0-60? I understand the S is a nice overall performer for a large sedan. I am certain they can get the roadster to handle and brake well to go with that 0-60-100-250.

For years all N.A.'s considered to be performance was judged in seconds,
0-60, 0-100 and the 1/4 mile. But I suppose now that cars which N.A.'s don't like are dominating those times, it's all of the sudden not enough.
As TopGear said, 'the nemesis of the American car, a corner'.

I don't get why people are upset. Tesla routinely does what they claim they've set out to do.

They're not perfect. There have been delays, there have been growing pains with first-batch quality issues, and I'm still not sure how they make money.

But in terms of saying they're going to make a car that can do XYZ, and then making said car, they've been doing it.

The benefits of electric cars alone are substantial (fuel economy, environmental benefits, etc.), and used to be the sole selling point on otherwise miserable penalty boxes (see the GeeWiz). But to combine those benefits in to a car with something for everyone to love? I don't see how that's bad. It's got performance for old-school enthusiasts, and gizmos and gadgets for "millennials" (whatever that means) who supposedly "don't like cars".

Honestly, the only reason people seem to hate Tesla these days is out of some weird jealousy and anger that the world in which they grew up is changing out of existence. And I mean real hate, plenty of reasonable people can point out the true challenges and positives and negatives of the company and its business model.

NO ONE is doing what Tesla is doing right now. Many are trying, and many more are promising; but today, Tesla is a one-man show in a market they forced open, and borderline created outright. Remember, the Model S only came out six years ago. That's barely the lifecycle of one car. Before that, all they had was the first generation roadster. So, to go from re-bodied Lotus, to where they are now, in the same time it takes to turn over a Toyota Camry generation, I say is damn impressive.

Nissan has not developed an electric car with the appeal, capabilities, or image of anything Tesla has released.

The Leaf is nice, no doubt about it, but it doesn't turn heads, it doesn't have the same range, it doesn't have the same performance, and it doesn't have the same level of technology (useful or otherwise).

Nissan may have done a lot of R&D or testing in that area to move the industry standard forward, behind the scenes, I can't dispute that. But, they have yet to bring a product to market that moves the needle in the same way as what Tesla has put out. They also have yet to bring out more than one product.

The Roadster will for sure, but I think the Model 3 will pull it off as well. I finally drove one today and was really impressed with the handling, definitely better than my RWD Model S. The Performance version should be a monster on the track.

A Model S can't make it a single time around the Nurburgring.

For a car company that emphasizes performance, I can see why this would seem an oversight.

But it's due to the limitations of the technological frontier they're pushing. Battery technology simply doesn't allow the same kind of energy storage density at that level of constant output yet. It is what it is.

But at least they're trying, and there are plenty of other ways the Model S can outperform a Honda Civic. To pick only one, and proclaim it the solitary and only legitimate standard of measure seems shortsighted.
