Automakers Asleep At The Wheel - Where Are All Of The Electric SUVs?

The world’s automakers are asleep at the wheel.

While customers clamor for more SUVs like the Toyota RAV4, Ford Edge, Chevrolet Traverse and Honda HR-V and as electric-drive technology advances rapidly, it’s virtually impossible to find an electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle in the fast growing urban-utility vehicle segment.

Mitsubishi builds the world’s best-selling plug-in hybrid SUV. Mitsubishi, for crying out loud.

I suspect it has to do with not wanting to rush a product to market. Most manufacturers are working on EVs. The Chevy Bolt is essentially a small crossover.
Another is that crossovers and SUVs are very profitable vehicles for automakers while EVs do not make money yet and will only sell with government incentives.

Oh gee - it is not bad enough that you can run out of electric power in the car on an open road - NOW - you want them to be able to run out of power in the Outback or in a Jungle.

Well Maybe you can send the Lions to get help!

Assuming they would even take their expensive SUVs to an outback or jungle. These things just need to make it through the urban jungle and out & back from the mall or shopping district.

But it would be nice to see more possible midsize & large CUV EV options.

Who are these people that are clamoring for an EV? I have never heard of someone saying" man Ive looked high and low for an EV Crossover and I can't find one". I think the industry is pushing EVs as a new technology that they can sell to buyers to be able to charge a premium.

Ask someone driving the Infiniti QX50 or Volvo (T6 engine) about the new engine technology that is in their vehicles.!<blank stare>

There would be a gigantic market for a stylish, Ford Transit Connect size small van that can be configured for cargo or for people and which had a 200 mile range.

That would be a no-brainer urban delivery vehicle if it existed and it was reliable.

A 200-mile range would be nice for delivery vehicle. However, whats the 80%-100% recharge time?

The EV market is still a tiny portion of the market both in terms of volume and demand. Thus, having a plethora of EV crossovers would not make a lot of sense.

Keep your eyes on BMW over the next 2 years. They're currently redesigning their production lines to be able to rapidly switch between drivetrains: ICE, Plug-in Hybrid, or EV.

It appears that BMW is smart in knowing it's hard to predict the future, but they're preparing for whatever might come, by being able to quickly ramp up production, should one drivetrain suddenly take off. In essence, BMW wants to be able to QUICKLY create whatever BMW the fickle market wants, day by day (AKA "Ready for anything"). That's pretty cool, if you ask me.

Audi's eTron electric SUV is due later this year and it will be priced less than a Tesla Model X. There is not much time to wait.

The Audi should have better build quality and better engineering by far. It won't take much to look better than bloated minivan called the Model X.

The Model X should have come before the 3 and the X needs a crash redesign to get rid of the sparrow doors.

The Audi eTron is in a completely different size class than the Model X. It's a much smaller SUV that will be more along the lines of the Model Y. There will be some cross-shopping for sure, but they are not perfect competitors. Hyundai also has an electric Kona that looks promising.
