NTSB Reveals Model X Was Accelerating Moments Before Fatal Crash Into Stationary Barrier

The Tesla Model X that crashed in California while being guided by its semiautonomous driving system sped up to 71 mph in the seconds before the vehicle slammed into a highway barrier, investigators said Thursday.

The National Transportation Safety Board issued a preliminary report on the March 23 crash showing that the driver's hands were detected on the steering wheel only 34 seconds during the last minute before impact.

Mr Huang did not have his hands on the wheel, the car in front of him changed lanes and his MX accelerated to his set speed (75 mph). Maybe since the attenuator was damaged by a recent accident and wasn't repaired the sensors were confused (my guess).
All said and done, it's sad that this happened but regardless of what car you drive and the tech inside it, as a driver you should ALWAYS pay attention.

Mercedes is billed to have one the best AEB systems with its Distronic Adaptive Cruise Control system. Below is part of the disclaimer by MB:

"Distronic Adaptive Cruise Control is no substitute for active driving involvement. It does not react to stationary objects, nor recognize or predict the curvature and lane layout of the road or the movement of the vehicles ahead. ... Drivers are cautioned not to wait for the DISTRONIC Proximity Warning System before braking, as that may not afford sufficient time and distance to brake safety [sic]."

While it's convenient to blame Tesla autopilot for this accident, I honestly think no other car can prevent this type of accident if the driver is not paying attention.

Perhaps because Tesla's is better than the MB system?

Terrifying! Where is NHTSA with the 'stop-sale' mandate?

Have the wrongful death lawsuits started yet? Are they all quietly settled by Tesla? What a horror show!

There are NO other headlines of Volvo's, MB's, or Cadillac's with similar (maybe better?) driver assist systems killing people, let alone ACCELERATING into an immovable concrete barrier! Truly terrifying.

You're not supposed to take your hands off the wheel. You must be attentive at all times. Tesla clearly states that. It's as simple as that.

What does cruise control do? It's a far more advanced version of that at this point.

SJ. Everybody else calls it adaptive cruise control (ACC). With standard cruise control you do the braking and accelerating while steering. ACC does the first two while you steer, so you are still involved and have to keep you hands on the wheel. They don't claim it is Auto Pilot which to some people con-notates it can do everything, like a fly by wire plane being able to take off, cruise and land on its own (drone).
