Porsche Green Lights Cayenne Coupe To Challenge X6 and GLE Coupe'

Porsche boss Oliver Blume has granted a production green light to a new coupe´ derivative of the third-generation Cayenne.

The new model, conceived to rival the BMW X6 and Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe´, is intended to broaden the scope of the Cayenne line-up. UK sales are planned to begin during the fourth quarter of next year, according to engineering sources close to the German car maker.

First hinted at by Blume in an interview with Autocar last year, the five-door Cayenne coupe´ will be based heavily on its more practical Cayenne sibling, alongside which it will be assembled at Porsche’s factory in Leipzig, Germany.

Should look nicer than the ungainly X6.

You're both wrong. LOL The magnificence of the Bentiguan and Uterus are what this is badge engineered from.

Wow, the haters are in full force. Funny because every successful major car brand is doing just that, "badge engineering". LEXUS, VW Group, GM, FORD, HONDA and so on. An what's even funnier, customers cannot get enough of them, just look at the LEXUS RX, AUDI Q5, ACURA RDX....

And yes, people in America and all over the world loves the PORSCHE/AUDI/LEXUS badge and as we can see, are paying more. They can care less if its a TOUAREG or HIGHLANDER underneath the skin.

Or a Dodge Magnum under the Levante or a Charger under the Giulia.

I don't know how you go into a dealer and look at the regular SUV and say, no, I want less trunk/rear space, a worse rear view, less headroom for rear seat passengers, a much bigger blind spot and to pay more for this privilege.

OK Canadian stay with me. I'm going to edit your post as follows: "I don't know how you go into a dealer and look at the regular SUV and say, no, I want less trunk/rear space, a worse rear view, less headroom for rear seat passengers, a much bigger blind spot and to pay more for this privilege [AND NOT REALIZE THAT YOU REALLY WANT A COUPE INSTEAD]."

Now if the Cayenne coupe were skewed toward being a Porsche dune buggy--i.e. something truly clever and not the "me too" (no reference intended)--it would be something cool.

CANADIAN - Just all about tastes and priorities, and sometimes those tastes and priorities are anything but rational. Not dissimilar to a buyer choosing a coupe vs. sedan, I guess. But if buyers didn't have irrational tastes, there wouldn't be a lot of cars in dealership showrooms and some entire brands may not exist.

Buyers are certainly interesting. I know plenty of folks with big SUVs who are single, no children, and never hauled any thing more than groceries in the cargo area. Most of those SUVs are AWD, in the dryest and hottest part of the country. Same with full-size pickup trucks. I know too many owners who have never put anything more than some luggage or shopping bags in the flatbed. I have a couple of friends with those big pickemup trucks with the flatbed covers, and they've never removed those covers for years. Those flatbeds for those drivers are only good for sticking out in parking lots and parking garages.

Sorry but if i buy a SUV it is because I want the extra hauling space for asses and masses of crap that I need to haul around. Why not rather have a "touring" or a hot hatchback that was fun to drive with better performance/style/economics than these abominations? These "squished ass soap box SUV's" are just stupid looking and unpractical in every other regard.

:0 I agree with @QEW. Word for word. I shake my head when I see them on the road.

These comments remind me of the first review I ever read for the BMW X5 in 1999.

I think it was in R&T, and basically said that the author couldn't understand why anyone would choose the X5 over the 5 wagon since it handled worse, had less storage space, etc and took the SUV craze in a direction they didn't understand.

I think the obvious answer is that some people want a high riding car, and are not interested in the cargo capacity or anything else the bigger ass version offers.

@carloslassiter: I've driven only coupes, convertibles, and ridden motorcycles for over 35 years... and loved them! When I decided I wanted to haul ALL my drums to gigs, a mid-size SUV was a big step up in cargo capacity (I fold the rear seats down). Plus, it didn't look or feel like a truck. Mind you, I got one of the most car-like SUVs.

I also drive in snow, so I appreciate the extra ground clearance and AWD in my SUV. Lots!

As for station wagons... in *my* mind, they seem like such a "dad car" (not that there's anything wrong with being a dad). I just find them dowdy; especially as a daily driver. Yeah, every teen aspires to have an "M" or AMG Station Wagon someday ;-)

I'm not asserting that my views are the "right" perspective or better than anyone else's; I'm just sharing how for some folks, a certain type of SUV makes for a great fit (FYI, I'm 6'2" @ 180lbs, so heft is not a factor).
