DRIVEN: So, What's The All-new Ferrari 488 Pista REALLY Like? BEST V8 Ferrari, Ever?
Some of my favorite cars in the world are Ferrari V8-powered machines. To be more specific, my heart is set on its low volume, mid-engine V8 cars.

Cars like the 348 Serie Speciale, 355 Serie Fiorano, 360 Challenge Stradale, 430 Scuderia and 458 Speciale. And now we're presented with the latest and greatest take on the more powerful and more hardcore V8 — the 488 Pista.

The Italians have employed all the tricks up their sleeve. There's active aerodynamics, there's specially designed bits to make this 488 more smooth through the air and, of course, it's gone on a diet. Described as feeling more akin to a superbike than a supercar, the writer details their experience in this CAR magazine review.

But, if you don't want to take the time to read that piece, we'll just get down to brass tacks below. See the verdict and weigh in on the comments.

Verdict

Rather than a limited edition, the Ferrari 488 Pista is a series production car, albeit a low-volume one. That said, it’s described as ‘nearly sold-out’, and if you want one, you’ll need to go through an approval procedure that makes winning the X-Factor look like child’s play. Of the chosen few, Ferrari expects more than half of Pista owners to use the car on track at least once, and they really should. It’s special to drive on the road, but really comes alive on a circuit. This is more than a 488 Challenge race car converted for road use – it’s an ultimate 488 road car designed to be as well-rounded and as fun to drive as possible, and the result is a truly captivating driver’s car.

Oh to drive one of these on a track... Only question is - will it be a match for the mind-boggling 720S?

I think we're going to find out soon enough :)

I think the 488 GTB is one of the best vehicles I've ever driven. It does everything exceedingly well.

Unfortunately, still waiting on McLaren to line up a 720S for me. :/

Agent 00R - I have actually Driven a New Portofino
Oh Dear - it can only go 198 MPH !

For a driving car - I believe it is all anyone would ever need on Public Roads. The Pista may beat it at a track - but MY track time was years ago -
I cannot believe I am making the point that the Portofino is more than enough - but these cars now have abilities that really really require a professional driver on a closed course in great weather to feel. I do not buy cars for show - they are drivers - and as a driver - I believe the Portofino would likely be a better choice for most who would drive it on the road regularly. After all - they are BOTH Ferraris - few people really would tell the difference.

Once you have been smitten with the V-12 bug - it is really really hard to consider anything else in the same class. THERE is still something about "real" V-12 engines - ones designed from the ground up to be v-12s - that you simply cannot duplicate with 8 cylinders.

Yes - the Pista is something really special - and surely is the best V-8 Ferrari ever. But I still want a Four more cylinders.

I have to concur, there's nothing like a V12.

BUT, I will always have room in my heart for a mid-engine V8 car.

Matt

I am not sure I have a total favorite - there are a number of them I liked - BUT - In 1971 - Jaguar produced the 3rd Series XKE - with a new 5.3 liter V-12 that was produced for LeMans - you have to get early models because later ones were detuned - but that V-12 was what hooked me on v-12 engines - and I will always remember them fondly. Later - Jaguar had a 6 Liter race V-12 in the XJR that was really sweet too.

I never took to the Aston/Ford Duratec V-6 based engines - they never really seemed right to me. However - then comes the Ferrari f140 engine in its various forms - the Ultimate in performance - and more "civilized" than a Lambo v-12 as well. I suspect it will be the last Naturally aspirated v-12 we will see on the market. The Twin Turbo V-8 will take over from there. And while the V-12 in the Maybach will be replaced by a Turbo V-8 - I will have one of the last V-12s

When I heard a Lamborghini Islero fire up for the first time I was smitten by the sound. I also love the sound of the Miura's V12
