VIDEO: History Is Made In Saudi Arabia As The FIRST Women's Driver's License Is Issued

...Earlier last month, the date of the issuing of licenses was announced. Saudi women will be allowed to start driving in the kingdom from June 24, the General Department of Traffic Director General Mohammed al-Bassami had then said.

“All the requirements for women in the kingdom to start driving have been established,” Bassami was quoted as saying in a statement released by the government on May 8.

In September 2017, a royal decree announced the end of a decades-long ban on women driving — the only one of its kind in the world...

Too bad that this is TOO late to be progress - Progress happened when the first American Woman received a Drivers License in 1900.

@TomM A rare moment when we agree. So what's the next bit of progress that Saudi women will get and how many years will they have to wait for that?

I'm not sure what's worse - the ignorance of this comment, or the resident dunce who agreed with it above.

Different example: Did you know that slavery was abolished in the British Empire in 1833? Took us another 30 years to get there. But I guess that's not progress since Americans were not first?

Would be great if it was faster, but progress is progress nonetheless.

@carloslassiter: Yup, and even though slavery in the US was abolished "by law" in the 1860s, a hundred years later (A FREAKIN' CENTURY LATER!) Jim Crow Laws still kept Blacks "in their place" in a US version of Apartheid. Here we are in 2018, and American-born Blacks are still second-class citizens. Slave-era mentality dies hard.

There are plenty of "skeletons in the closet" to go around :-(

Oh, and "friendly and kind" Canada? Did you know that in the past decade, mass graves are still being discovered where hundreds of school children were buried in unmarked pits. These children died in Indian Residential Schools. Indian children were forcibly separated from their parents by The State, and sent to Residential Schools (segregated boarding schools, apart from society), where the official doctrine was to "kill the Indian in the child." Many thousands of children died from neglect and abuse. This was part of the White Canada Policy. The last Indian Residential School was closed in... 1995! Can I get a "HOLY SH*T!", folks?

As I said earlier, there are plenty of skeletons in the closet to go around. Even in "advanced" nations, like ours.

So yeah, I applaud Saudi Arabia for taking a step forward. I do so while recognizing that they still have a ways to go.

Several of the women activists who fought for the right to drive were arrested after the driving ban was lifted and are facing prison for 3-20 years and are being called "traitors." They don't want these women to think they can expect any more rights anytime soon.

Lets try to guess how many times DickDarringer has traveled outside the US: I'd guess he hit a couple of bars in Tijuana, but has never actually been to any of the other countries he dismisses as "sh*tholes".
