Are YOU Ready To Embrace Self-driving Vehicles And Give Up Your Keys OR Are They Going To Have To Pry Them Out Of Your Cold, Dead Hands?
Although I know that AutoSpies is an enthusiast-oriented destination, it seems that there's quite a bit of budding excitement surrounding the future. When isn't there a buzz about what's coming in the next five or 10 years?

I think many are still wondering where their flying car is.

A big topic for the past year or so has been autonomous vehicles. While we're at the very nascent stages of its development and how its legislated, it seems that some are eagerly anticipating the day a fully autonomous vehicle can shuttle them to their destination.

Another group of folks are afraid of what this means for the future of driving. With some prophesizing the end of people controlling an automobile once it's determined that computers can pilot vehicles more effectively and without incidents, it sounds like a doomsday scenario for those with gasoline pumping through their veins.

So, I've got to ask: Are YOU ready to embrace self-driving vehicles OR are you ready for a fight?

...Musk previously said that the capacity of Tesla’s Autopilot would start to differentiate between the Enhanced Autopilot and Full Self-Driving Capability packages at some point last year.

That didn’t happen as Autopilot development started to fall behind schedule, but it now looks like it should start to be the case starting with Tesla’s Version 9.0 software update to be released in August, according to Musk.

Tesla already started releasing some significant improvements to Autopilot 2.0 this year – starting with a full rewrite of the system’s neural net released last March and another important update started being pushed to the fleet last week...

I am all for driver assist technology, but self-driving is for lazy, entitled snowflakes. The Desert Eagle will protect my keys.

Not a lazy entitled snowflake, but on any trip between San Diego and downtown LA I am more than ready to kick back and let the car do its thing.

Both options: responsibility and irresponsibility

There are no autonomous cars available for sale, so what's to embrace?

And based on the track record we've seen to date for "driver assistance systems", when autonomous cars (Level 5) become available for sale, I'll let others be the guineapigs, thank you.

For the last 50 years - at least once and often several times a year - I drive from New Jersey to Forida - leaving about 1 AM - and arriving at my home down there around suppertime. It is by far the most enjoyable part of my vacations - I cannot be contacted (I do not answer the phone when driving PERIOD) - ANd I even manage to remember Pedro's Billboards as well. I now admit that eventually I will not be able to do that trip straight through as I did in the past.

FOr me - Autonomous features means mobility after I would probably have to give up driving long distances. ANd I see no problem admitting that IF these features were safe (I can afford them) - I would use them. Not Now though. There are too many holes in the system. Frankly - I really do NOT like using adaptive speed control - it slows me down to the car in front of me - rather than indicating I should pass.

I cannot see WHY people here call these things Irresponsibility- I will bet few of them still use a Hand Fed Coal Furnace - and lots of them have a Propane Gas Grill. Progress happens - and If you are unwilling to accept that - you are doomed to live in the past. Yes - I CAN SEE - situations where this technology will be of benefit to me - and if YOU cannot -you will get older eventually.

Its TOO LATE already - there is already a system in place where cars can "Talk"to other cars. ANd I have said in the past - eventually SPeed limits will be enforced upon the car - you will not be able to exceed them. In addition - acceleration rates - as well as merging into highways will be controlled - space between cars will be mandated too. It is GOING TO HAPPEN - and for those who do not believe that - sorry but you are wrong.

So - the question is NOT - would you use autonomous driving systems - the question is - IF your car was limited to the same speed, acceleration rates - space between cars - merging - etc - ELECTRONICALLY from outside the car - so that the only thing you might be able to do is steer -

ANd sorry - but we do not have a constitutional right to driving a car -

@vidv ILLOGICAL comparison.

You may be amazed at how sophisticated high-rise elevators can be, at what speed they move, how they coordinate, and the amount of safety tech that keeps people alive. It's not dumb and not illogical, it's real-world engineering, and millions of people use it every day.

I will keep my V10 manual R8 and TTRS for life but will have a SUV with modern tech as well. Best of both worlds. Although a hack may be in order to avoid VTV Orwellian tracking....

I love my stick shift cars, but I'm an anachronism at the ripe old age of 30. Granted my circle of guy friends love driving a manual too, but venture out of that and it's automatic central. My wife's friends think she's clever because she can drive a stick shift.

Mr Darringer, at 30 you are an anachronism, bravo. Most folks under 35 can't drive sticks at all. I get nice car comments on my R8, I retort can you drive a stick? Nope, I reply your missing out..... ;) I'm 43 and my niece didn't even know what a clutch pedal was when I took her for a ride in it. She squealed in delight at the power, sound and fury of the V10 though.

Where I live I have a several mile stretch of divided highway that dead ends at a park and it's easy to slide a u turn and blast out the opposite way. The question is do I want to blast around in the GT350, a TVR, or a 914-6 clone. My fostered son knows how to drive a stick as well. 10 years from now when my oldest son is old enough to drive i doubt there will be any stick shifts left among new cars.

It's clearly coming. It may turn out badly like in those Terminator movies, but it is coming.

In 2015 it seemed 10 years away. Then all of a sudden things started moving really fast and seemed like it would be here by 2020. But with the accidents and negative press I think 2025-2030 is likely.

I am still betting on 2020, mostly due to Waymo who was ready to launch months ago. They are somewhere between 1-2 years ahead of the competition at this point and will definitely launch an uber-like service by the end of 2019.
