Preowned Small Car Values Rise As Consumers Face Dwindling New-Car Options

Prices for small used cars are climbing to unexpected levels, a sign that demand is growing as price-sensitive consumers face dwindling new-car options.

Small used-car prices in the second quarter rose across the board, at retail and wholesale. While some analysts point to seasonal shifts as reason for the uptick, the development also follows moves by some major automakers to curb production of small cars.

Matt - Look at the article again

It appears that the supply of used small cars has been reduced - NO SURPRISE here - since ALL have been talking about the lower sales of cars against Crossovers.
BUT what it does imply is that the market for smaller used car have not been reduced - ergo the price increase -so Maybe this is not the end of cars as we know them -

Look at it again?

My only concern is to stock what sells. I do think that axing the Fiesta and Focus in the USA except for the daffy Focus wannabe crossover is STUPID.

I'd have killed the Fiesta and brought the new Focus from China with a significant price drop (i.e. down to Fiesta pricing) and offered it at two levels base and mid-range with ZERO options configurability.

The Focus sedan should have been the heir apparent to the Fusion vacating the market.

The quicker Ford can get a Focus-sized crossover to market the better. The Escape is too big to replace the Focus and the Ecosport is too small and dismal to be a massive seller against the Civic and Corolla. Ford needs a car of that size with similar volume.

Mistakes by Ford And FCA For Killing Off Cars. Some Advice For Both Of You After You Digest This:
Can You Imagine Honda Killing Off The Civic / Accord or Toyota Killing Off The Corolla / Camry.... I did not think so. What does this mean to you guys >>>>> Step Up Your Game !!!!

@ricks0me That is an illogical comparison. The Hondas and Toyotas you mention as selling hand over fist, but the FCA and Ford products (1) had nowhere near the volume and then became huge money losers in each and every one.

Indeed. Ford--and GM too--never got serious about competing with the Corolla/Civic or the Camry/Accord because all of their efforts were "OK" or "good enough" rather than being class leading.

I happen to like the Fusion and I see no real advantage to either the Camry or Accord, but for the Fusion to have had a chance at cracking them, it would have needed to have been better than for several generations.

@Jazzyjazz The Fusion's rear seat space is actually equal to or slightly better than a Camry. As for weight, the Fusion is a negliblible 100 pounds heavier than a Camry. The Accord is significantly lighter than both.

The Fusion is largely a reskinned, last-generation Mondeo, that was hastily adapted for the USA market. As such, it's incredibly good. I really think Ford will regret having no sedans.

Smoking crack is a bad thing. The Camry is quite good quality and appropriate-to-its-mission performance for the asking price.
