Toyota Celebrates Domination Of Le Mans By Announcing New Hypercar Will Have Same 986HP Hybrid Powertrain

After bagging pole and second position in qualifying for this year’s Le Mans 24 hour race, Toyota has announced that it has begun development of a new hypercar. The Japanese marque’s near-1000bhp hybrid car will be based on the GR Super Sports Concept that was first shown at the 2018 Tokyo Auto Salon and is now on display at the Circuit de la Sarthe in Toyota’s Gazoo Racing Fan Village.

Toyota’s future super sports car will use the same powertrain that’s already proving successful in its pole position LMP1 car. Not only will this establish a strong connection between Toyota’s motorsport activities and its road cars, but the technology and knowledge that Toyota Gazoo Racing has collected developing the LMP1 car will transfer directly into the new road car.

Congrats to Toyota @ Le Mans. Don't give the car goofy styling. The picture above is a nice looking vehicle

It's because of the Mustang tail lights.

Win on Sunday and sell them on Monday strategy still works I guess.

Sell on Monday? If they can sell 100 of these worldwide I'll be surprised.

Indeed. The LFA should have taught them that no one wants a Toyota halo car.

Except that the LFA is Lexus branded and all 500 were sold out..

NO...they did NOT sell out. About a dozen cannot find buyers even to this day. Moreover, the LFA was very slow to find the buyers that it did get. It was a serious stumble for Toyota.

The dozen or so that remain unsold are because dealers are hoarding them and do not want to sell them to customers. All 500 were delivered just not to retail customers. My local dealer was one of them. This is a common practice by dealers throughout the industry. Also, if it was such a failure why are LFA's going above sticker price through multiple auctions? Shows what you know @mdarringer.

They also have NO one actively trying to buy them.

@MDarringer you are a fool. No one trying to buy them? This one sold for $700k.

The fool is the guy who paid that much for an LFA. Look at the ones that are currently on sale (way under that):

By the way, who did TOYOTA beat? Rebellion Racing? LoL! There were no major car manufacturers this year in the class. Porsche, AUDI and so on never had any competition all these past years, that is why they didn't even compete this year. Why didn't TM had won before, because of "reliability issues". What a joke, after all those billions spent to beat a privateer team powered by TOTYOTA engines.

It's Audi all over again. Audi dominated Le Mans because all the major players (e.g. auto manufacturers) left Le Mans. Toyota won 2018 Le Mans because there were no major players. Nice try Toyota, try again. Just a FYI, Toyota tried their hands at Formula One for eight seasons with billions of dollars spent and not even one single race won. That goes to show how much racing heritage or lack thereof is in their blood. The only people who buy and drive Toyotas/Lexus are people without a pulse.

Not really a fair comment. There are usually only 8-10 cars in the LMP1 class anyway. Toyota has been in the hunt for years. They had bad luck in 2015 and 2016. In 2017 they beat all the Audi entries and finished 2nd only to Porsche. They could have won last year too, but they had an unfortunate mechanical failure/incident.

In 2017, Audi was on their way out of Le Mans. They didn't care if they won or lost, they were done with Le Mans. If Toyota had any real racing heritage they'd win at least one Le Mans race in the presence of other major players like Audi and Porsche but they didn't despite being in Le Mans for so long. Toyota won 2018 Le Mans because they had no competition other than themselves, plain and simple.
