BMW 8-Series vs Mercedes S-Class vs Lexus LC: Who Gets Your $100K?

BMW 8-Series vs Mercedes S-Class vs Lexus LC: Who Gets Your $100K?

BMW has finally revealed the new 8-Series, with the company calling it “an unrivaled combination of inspiring sportiness and contemporary luxury”. It’s been a really long time since BMW has challenged Mercedes in the upper premium segments with a two-door model but here we are and, what do you know, there’s a Lexus here too.

Now, before some of you start arguing that the Lexus LC isn’t exactly a direct rival to the 8-Series and the S-Class Coupe, real customers looking to spend $100k are more than likely to cross-shop between these models, regardless of what you think.

S Class all day, the other 2 will be dated in 3 yrs....there’s something classic and timeless about the S Coupe, not to mention its based on the best car in the world, win win

None... a coupe that handles like a sedan with 2 less doors just does not appeal to me. If I was going to buy a coupe it would be a 911 or the upcoming mid engine corvette. If I had to chose one of these I would probably go with the BMW 8 series.

Lexus LC. It's by far the freshest looking and by far the most captivating.

Neither, because I can't justify spending that much money on a car. Yes, I make enough to afford it. Just won't pay that kind of money.

S-Class. The Lexus looks good in pictures, but is not as dynamic in person, to me. The BMW, in pictures, just doesn't do much for me. Seeing the S-Class in the real, it just has a presence. Aggressive and elegant at the same time, and truly looks like its price suggests, and more. That being said, I'd take any Aston over these, design-wise (and a bit more money of course).

S, then the 8, then the LC.

The Lexus by a large margin. It is interesting from every angle and fresh. Pictures do not show the complex surfacing. The MB front half looks like every other MB. The BMW looks like a busier Mustang design study. I prefer the Mustang.

I agree. In person the LC is sublime perfection. It's Lexus' "E-Type" moment.

D) None of the above.

Jonesh -Nonsense - I too agree with TheSteve

In this case though - we are talking about Large two door "coupe" cars - something that does not sell well. IF I want a performance car - that is what I would buy - not a 2 door Luxoboat. ANd If I am buying a car use to carry passengers - I still prefer a four door. THe fact is - this particular type of vehicle offers me nothing I want - and I simply would not choose any of them. This is not a political question either.

Different strokes for different folks...

For luxurious presence and driving the wife....S Class
For pure driving pleasure and backroad jaunts..8 series
For 21st century looks, reliability and price..Lexus LC

My wife loves her RCF but is fiending (sic) for an LC. I fully expect to come home one day and see a new one parked in the carport.

Except people who want pure driving pleasure usually don't purchase nearly- 5,000 pound luxury barges.

Not true. In its day the Jensen Interceptor was a pleasurable cruiser and not exactly a feather weight. The Mercedes SLs have always been porky. All of these cars are cruisers not bruisers.

It depends on what your definition of pleasure is.

Is it clipping apexes and drifting through corners?

Is it a long cruise of a trip ensconced in comfort?

This trio will be excellent for the latter.

If you want the former, get a Shelby Mustang GT350.

I think the BMW is the best looking of the group and probably is the sportiest. The Mercedes coupe looks like a sucked caramel, maybe a suppository. It's just a formless excreted lump. It does have a nice interior though. Until Lexus drops the Starship Trooper insectoid looking designs, I will never consider one, although this is one their better looking cars.

Agreed. The Lexus is just lost in its own world and the S class will almost drive sporty, but leave you wanting more.

Actually the Lexus LC 500 has done pretty well on track comparisons. True it is not a track car but it does not embarrass itself either. The Merc looks a bit boring. I've seen the LC500 up close and it looks stunning. From the photos the Beemer looks good but I wonder if its going to look to elongated in the flesh for its height. The Lexus is the smallest car here but its proportions are right.
