Trump Tells EU To Level Playing Field Or Face Import Taxes To US

Donald Trump has threatened to levy import tariffs of 20% on European cars. The US president made the warnings on Twitter, claiming that if European “Tariffs and Barriers are not soon broken down and removed” America would “be placing a 20% Tariff on all of their cars coming into the US.”

Cars made in America and imported to the European Union countries are currently subject to import tariffs of 10 per cent, yet goods traded from Europe to the US only face a 2.5 per cent levy.

I like that he's after Germany to pay its fair share for NATO and the UN and he's willing to threaten their auto industry.

Libtards? Are you 12? It's pretty pathetic that you can't write a sentence without including that or "triggered." Some of your responses are so canned and stupid, I think they must be a Russian bot, but even the Russians have smarter AI than that.

Americans will pay extra rather than drive a POS American car.

In total $s the tariffs amount to about 3% across the EU, 3.1% for Canada and 2.4% for the US. There are 1000s of specific tariffs around things like peanuts etc... that are harder to evaluate. I think one of the main areas the US is pushing is to allow chlorine rinsed Chickens, GMO products and various chemically injected beef/pork to be sold in the EU. They have laws prohibiting or at least requiring labeling of such products.

Americans enjoy a selection of cars from across the world at prices that every one else envies. If Trump imposes this tariff he will destroy that market for American consumers. What about the auto dealers and everyone in the US they employ? I read in the WSJ yesterday quotes from an Audi, Porsche dealer in NJ. He said that would turn his business into a vacant lot. Is this what the "car enthusiasts" of Autospies are rooting for?

i think Trunk wants a level playing field so i gather that means every one either pays same tariff or no tariff on vehicles. say hello to merc trucks.

Both parties have tariffs. The US has a 25% tariff on light trucks and vans and a 2.5% tariff on cars. The EU has a 10% tariff on US cars, but have offered for years to equalize, but the US won't let its precious light truck market face any real competition. Trump talks out of both sides of his mouth. He spouts tariffs to protect American companies from competition, but on the other hand claims to want to be the most radical freetrader of all by dropping all tariffs. Which is it? I'm sure the Europeans would be happy to see the American car market further opened to their products. Does American make anything other than a few niche market halo cars that anybody in Europe would be interested in at any price? No.

President Trump is forcing the EU’s hand. He knows they import more to us then we do to them. By threatening to impose tariffs on European goods, his plan is to get the Europeans to lift tariffs on U.S. goods, opening up Europe to the U.S. We will not put tariffs in, but increase American outputs. MAGA!

Forcing the EU's hand? That's ridiculous. The EU has offered to equalize auto tariffs or even remove them entirely for years. The US has a 25% tariff on vans and light trucks and 2.5% on cars. The EU has a 10% tariff for all vehicles. Or at least they did until this week when they slapped a 25% tariff on US motorcycles. China this week threatened to raise their tariffs on US cars to 40% from 15% if Trump doesn't back down. This isn't going to end well for anybody. The US is 5% of the world population and shrinking in relative size and better learn how to compete smartly rather than through juvenile bluster.

While pretty much the who world agrees that trade barriers and isolationism are detrimental and self-destructive, it seems the US is one of the few places that choose to forge ahead in that direction.

The same applies to the connection between humans and prolific pollution, as most of the world understands, while the US charges in the "Go Coal" direction.

I wonder if Trump Cult members will wake up at some point, or whether the stage is set for Jonestown II, as they continue to sip the Kool Aid.

Cars are only one thing that the EU and the US trade. The tariffs are not lined up cars for cars, apples for apples. It is a give and take that has worked for 70 years. Drumpf's narrow focus, ADD and infantile ego are only going to drive us into a recession, which he will blame everyone else for. He is still trying to get daddy's approval.
Harley Davidson has announced they are moving some production overseas to Europe, costing Americans jobs. Some California farmers are planning to move to Mexico from California. See, the economy is far more complex than selling real estate.

Lobster production is shifting to Canada due to Chinese 25% tariff just announced on US lobsters. Canadian lobster operations are booming now. The MAGA crowd forgets when hating on Canada, Mexico, and the EU that they aren't just importers but our biggest customers too. The AutoSpies bunch are car guys in the business. They should realize you can spit on your partners and expect that to work out financially for you. This isn't a construction project where you can brow the sub-contractors. Trump is out of his league.

rlbdcky, that is the best description I have heard of Trump. He does treat other countries, especially our allies like sub-contractors. And he is definitely out of his league.

This is coming from someone who isnt even in a league... Like the arrogant socialists in Europe, who fancy themselves as a "higher" culture are in Trumps league... absolutely laughable.. they're cowards.
