Did GM Shaft US Workers By Building New Blazer Crossover In Mexico?

General Motors Co. will build its second-coming of the Chevrolet Blazer in Mexico, and the United Auto Workers is not happy about it.

Within minutes of the release of the official news Thursday night that GM would bring back the Blazer SUV for the 2019 model year, the labor union issued a statement from Terry Dittes, UAW vice president and director to the UAW-GM department.

“This news that the iconic Blazer nameplate will be built in Mexico is disappointing to UAW families and communities across this country," Dittes said. "GM employs over 15,000 production workers in Mexico, pays the workers less than $3 per hour and exports over 80 percent of the vehicles to the U.S. to sell here. This is all happening while UAW-GM workers here in the U.S are laid off and unemployed. We in the UAW have always supported products manufactured and produced in the U.S. and will continue to do so as a part of the fabric of our union.”

The UAW shafted its own workers!!!

Indeed and the UAW did it in more ways than one:

1. Wages that are unsustainably too high.
2. Transferring dues to the DNC who have done NOTHING for the workers.
3. Having a history of exchanging a pay increase for a loss of jobs
4. Being antagonistically anti-worker in everything they do

Oh - Matt -that is NONSENSE and you know it.

The average factory wage in Mexico is less than $10 PER DAY - if they offered you twice that WOULD YOU TAKE IT? (I'll bet you would not be talking about TVRs if you did)- THAT has nothing to do with the UAW - nor could the UAW offer USA production that approaches that level and YOU KNOW IT. EVEN GM pays its assembly line workers far more in Mexico - $8-10 per hour- and I'll bet you would not run to grab that either. ANd even the UAW in the USA agreed to allow such an pay scale - it is below minimum wage of most states.

Work it out - Matt - JUST HOW MUCH MONEY DO YOU MAKE PER HOUR. IF someone from your company came to you and said they would only offer you to take MEXICAN WAGE SCALE and BENEFITS - My guess is that you would be gone in a flash.

It's nonsense why? Because you want to prattle on and obfuscate things by hoping people will think you know something because you wrote an essay?

(1) Your data is outdated, but
(2) My points are all verifiable

My data is current and verifiable

Again - the problem remains - even if the UAW wages were lower - they could NEVER appproach those in Mexico and YOU know it MATT

I note you did not indicate that you would be willing to work for the Mexican wage scale. When you worked it out - how much money PER HOUR did you make last year - ? I'll bet it was more than the average UAW wage.

@MD Should not all the MAGA hat wearing crowd be turning to the great leader and asking WHY? Isn't he the consummate deal maker and the guy who always gets what he wants? Wasn't he going to bring back all the jobs America lost? Or is it all smoke and mirrors and town hall chanting? The Blazer will be made in Mexico and there is zero that Trump can do about it. Just ignore this hiccup and buy another hat or Trump tie.

I thought Trumps policy was to force US makers to build in USA and provide jobs to US citizens or face high import tarrifs

It actually has LITTLE to do with Daffy Trump or the UAW.

General Motors is a worldwide car manufacturer - making more cars OUTSIDE the USA than inside. They are not interested in anything other than making money. Even if the UAW allowed workers to accept LESS THAN CURRENT MINIMUM WAGE in the usa(GM Assembly line workers in Mexico receive $8-10/hr - INCLUDING Benefits) - they still could not legally offer the mexican pay scale in the USA. WHile there are lots here who blame the UAW - the fact is - most of you would not work for that type of money - and certainly YOU could not afford to even buy the vehicle you are making as well. THe fact is - that amount of money would not even pay for a good health insurance policy in the USA - and neither GM or the UAW control the cost of health care in the USA. By the way - the average factory wage in Mexico is a lot less than $10 PER DAY(Yes day - not hour).

ADD IN - that Plants in Mexico often get 50 year tax abatements as well - while their property taxes are less than 10% of most of the USA. And of course - the cost of service for your plant is also lowered.

Since all of the vehicle will get delivered - the is no way ANY manufacturer can match the cost structures of Mexico in the USA or Canada. This is why manufacturing job are leaving the usa - and Canada too = A multi National Corp cannot justify American production when it has LOTS of available options to produce things cheaper - and its purpose it to produce profit for it shareholders - and has NO real interest what the WORKERS say.

GM is a corporation. It does business to make a profit. By law, it must maximize value to shareholders. It competes with others in a global market. It, like other corporations, does what it needs to do to stay alive and be profitable. GM CEOs are on record stating that, though in much more palatable (marketable) language.

If you have a problem with this, then you have a problem with the fundamental workings of Capitalism.

Only the gullible would expect corporations to put public interests, and public welfare ahead of their own survival, or profit.

This isn't a slam against them. I don't assert that things should be any other way. It's just a statement of facts, like 'em or not.

I don't have a problem with this but for any company to sell in China one must form a JV w/a Chinese company and share your technology with them, instantly propelling them to near world class manufacturing OR pay insane tariffs that render your products uncompetitive. So GM is now importing the Buick Envision from China, I say NO, build it here or pay the tariff. They've always been full of bean counters so figure it out. Volvo, Chinese owned, is building a plant in SC so at least THIS Chinese company is spending money on a plant and employing Americans and using our ports to export. I'm disappointed GM is building this in Mexico and won't buy one but this company is constantly making bad decsions. This is just another one.
