RAISE and PRAISE: WHICH All-American Car Or Truck Would YOU Get If Trump Heavily Taxed Imports?

RAISE and PRAISE: WHICH All-American Car Or Truck Would YOU Get If Trump Heavily Taxed Imports?
So, I'll be the first to admit it. I am not what you'd call, politically astute. I keep up with the Joneses and all but don't get me wrong: I won't be running for office anytime soon.

That said, I've been keeping a bit closer attention to the business news due to President Trump. With what he's been saying about trade in regards to our friends, it's been a bit concerning. Well, that's if you're a car freak.

That's because Trump's ready to dial it up for certain countries — Germany!

Earlier today, just for fun, I was brainstorming WHICH American vehicle I'd want to add to my fleet next in the event I needed an all-new ride tomorrow. And while I've learned to love certain American vehicles, I am mostly partial to the imports.

For me, it was more difficult than I imagined it would be. It's tough to think of the BEST American car produced today and what I'd want in my garage. So, I've got to ask: WHICH all-new American car or truck would YOU get if Trump taxed imports?

Plenty of good choices. Corvette, Camaro, Mustang, CT6, CTS-V, new Navigator, Tesla, Bolt, Jeep, etc.

Still think the idea of tariffs is completely misguided.

I'll take the Shelby Mustang GT500.

The fact that it will be built off the mediocre Alfa platform rather than the superior Mercedes platform is making the next GC likely a failure. Then factor in Fiat's yesterthink engines and it's a clusterjam.

There is already a 2.5% tariff on EU cars and a 25% tariff on EU pick up trucks coming into the USA. You are already making this choice today.

The 25% tariff on vans and trucks has essentially closed off that market to foreign manufacturers. Once that tariff drops, the US pickup and van market will be wide open for competition. The Sprinter vans that you see everywhere are built in Germany and would normally be subject to that tariff. To get around the tariff, Mercedes removes the engine and drivetrain and ships that separately to the US, but other than reinstalling the drivetrain in South Carolina, the vehicle is manufactured in the EU. Once that drops, that will no longer be necessary. They'll save a lot of money just shipping them completely assembled. It would also mean Ford could source the Ranger internationally rather than build it here. Same with the VW Amarok. Dropping tariffs cuts both ways. I'm all for it, but Trump isn't interested in free trade, he just wants to damage Germany.

Harley-Davidson announced today that it is shifting production of its bikes sold in the EU oversees to avoid the EU tariff. They sell 40,000 bikes a year there and it's their second most important market after the US. Not only that, to avoid damage to the EU dealers and their market there, they will absorb the tariff rather than pass it on until they can shift production which could take up to 18 months to do--a big hit to their profitability. This is how your tariff war is going to play out--lots of collateral damage to US workers and companies.

I actually still have a CT6 and for what I actually paid for it (It is 6 Cylinder Non-turbo) - the price was in the 5 series/E class range. However - the CT6 is far larger and more accomodating inside - especially for a person of my size. The car drives ell - Handles well - and required only ONE warranty software update - has not had a single mechanical problem.

For normal use - it has plenty of power - (no it is not a performance vehicle) because of it light weight - and it is a pleasure to drive long distances.

If I could complain - CUE of three years ago was really slow and not all that easy to work through until you got the hang of it - IT IS MUCH better already today.

I would certainly choose this over the Lexus LS and similar offerings and I would recommend this highly.

"Trump obtained his loans in extraordinary fashion. In the mid-2000s, he had burned so many creditors that Deutsche was the only major bank willing to lend to him as no US institution would. First, Trump defaulted on a payment on a $640 million loan for his Chicago hotel and the bank sued him. Eventually, he repaid the bank by getting a loan in 2010 from Deutsche themselves—this time from their wealth management division, rather than the presumably infuriated real estate team." This is how the Russians own Trump.

Russia and to a lesser extend Saudi Arabia are funneling money to Trump through Deutsche Bank. Business loans go through the commercial lending arm, not from wealth management. This is called "money laundering" and why Mueller has experts in money laundering on his team.

Wait... Full stop, Trump is going to take a wrecking ball to the car Industry in the USA at the rate he is going.. no one builds a fully american car just like no European company builds a fully "German" car.. all the BS about Trump aside, a trade war will make many many people in the USA lose jobs... Your politics don't matter when we are in a full blown recession because we think chest thumping is more important than logic. The largest Nail (holding your house together nail) company in the USA is on the verge of going under and moving to Mexico because of the stupid steel tariffs. They can resume buying their steel from Europe and China, make nails in Mexico and import duty free, or stay in the USA and pay so much too much for steel that they go out of business... you think that will be different for Cars... Hell no... and that is just the start of the dominoes falling... trade tariffs will affect everyone reading this website and none of you will see it coming until your job is gone or your cost of living skyrockets... VERY BAD to start taxing everything so Trump can claim a short term win... bad...

Well said, sir. John McCain was spot on when he said Trump's chest thumping to sound tough (to his daughter probably) is not the same as being tough. This from a Navy combat veteran who survived nearly 6 years as a POW enduring frequent torture. All he had to do was sign a confession and they would have freed him.

Trump on the other hand was the real p***y who got deferments due to his aching feet. Poor baby. Sad.

As for civility, Trump pushed the civility out of politics. It is an embarrassment to the US to watch him. He did not have the balls to got to Vietnam not the balls to have regular press conferences because he does not have sufficient knowledge of legislation. SAD.

MDaranged, what did McCain do that was treasonous? Do you understand the definition of treason? I can provide it to you if needed and help you with the big words.

Sounds like Trump helping Russia rig our election is more treasonous than McCain disagreeing with this horrible president.

First of all, belushi, it was $40 billion and it was Iranian investments in the US dating back to the 1980 hostage crisis. Under international law, the deal struck meant repatriating this money. It should be noted the Obama refused to pay interest. It was cash flown out as there are still mo banking transactions allowed with Iran and the west. So, your talking points from Fox news [sic] are all refuted. The gun program to Mexico was actually started under Bush.
What illegal email server are you referring to? Every secretary of state has also used a private server. No secrets lost and no criminal activity found. Strike two.
