Unlike Hollywood, German Industry Awards Are Cancelled Because Of Corruption And Scandal

And Germany’s most prestigious automaker awards go to .... no one!

In a country where Volkswagen AG, Daimler AG and BMW AG dominate news coverage and their CEOs are treated like celebrities, the “Golden Steering Wheel” awards are usually a glitzy production with a mix of executives and movie stars that provide days of tabloid fodder.

But this year -- with fines and investigations piling up and executives behind bars -- there’s little reason for self congratulation, leading publisher Axel Springer SE, the event’s organizer, to cancel the annual party.

“We love cars. The people who build, buy and drive them are our customers as well as our readers,” Marion Horn, editor-in-chief of Springer weekly Bild am Sonntag, said on Friday. “But now is not the time to grant awards and celebrate.”

LOL! When Dieselgate blew its lid, class-action lawsuits started mounting. US and Canadian owners of affected vehicles were quickly offered some unconditional "sorry money" (a prepaid card valued at a few hundred dollars to buy VW/Audi Group (VAG) products + some free maintenance + some free roadside assistance). Later, owners in these markets got lucrative sorry money (5-figure checks) and some got handsome buybacks.

But not so in the UK, Germany, etc.! Huh! Why not?

Well, you see, VAG is a German company. A BIG German company. There are lots of German jobs and a big chunk of the German economy is tied up in VAG. And Germany is part of the EU, the European Union. And in case you didn't know, there is an incestuous relationship between VAG and the German Government. There has been, for many decades.

So Americans were rightfully tough on VAG, resulting in hefty fines and expensive class-action settlements that cost VAG tens of billions of dollars. Meanwhile, the EU went soft on VAG for mysterious reasons. Perhaps the incestuous relationship between VAG, the German government, and Germany's place in the EU played a part? Ya think? :-)

Reports of corruption should surprise no one. Corruption within the German auto industry is also no surprise. VAG has already been thoroughly indicted, and new discoveries of recent cheating keep being unearthed! Recently, Mercedes was implicated in diesel emissions cheating (AKA breaking the law). As far as we know, BMW has not broken emissions laws.

We live in interesting times.

@coch you are just as pathetic a poster a @joneshamilton and add nothing but hard right-wing talking points to the discussion, of which, they normally have nothing to do about cars. All Americans want safe borders and to treat people with dignity as they flee unsafe conditions in there home nations. Being supportive of their cause does not mean you want open borders. The remainder of your comment is just stupid. Find another site to share your twisted views of the world.

@CANADIANCOMMENTS: You err in using the sanitized phrase "hard right-wing." That's what folks who call themselves "Alt Right" prefer, just like they prefer "White Nationals."

They have nothing to do with Conservatism, such as what we saw during the Reagan era or during the two Bush administrations. In fact, the US does not even have a Conservative Party. In its place, we have The Trump Party, a political Party that identifies with, and supports Nazi principles, defiles The Constitution and rule of law, and has more in common with The Führer and other dictators than with past American presidents.

More accurately descriptive language includes: White Supremacist, Nazi (this is a fact: Trumpist Leader, #45, refers to American Nazi marchers as "Fine People"!), bigots, racist, Islamophobes, hate-mongers, etc.

Common elements amongst these people include hate, derision, deflection, and denial. Note this. You'll often see it in their posts, here at AutoSpies. You'll often see this pattern amongst posters Aspy11, coch, fiftysix, jazzyjazz, joneshamilton, MDarringer, qwertyfla1 (yeah, Canada has bigots too), skytop, xjug1987a, and handful of others.

Sadly, such pro-Nazi sentiments and support also exist within the ranks of AutoSpies. That's why this condition is allowed to fester here, and is even *promoted*. Remember AutoSpies articles such as (paraphrased) "What is the biggest douchebag car?" and "What is the biggest poser toy?" Hate begets hate. It's that simple.

Within these AutoSPies pages (and elsewhere, like Breitbart), hate and derision are passed off as "free speech," while Daffies whine "hate speech" whenever anyone shines a spotlight on them, and calls them out for who they truly are (example of deflection and denial).

That's just who they are. That's the nature of the beast.

And you're wasting your breath attempting to reason with them. There are very old German Nazis still alive, who believe with absolute certainty that The Führer was a good man, and that he and The Third Reich were good and right. They believe this, in spite of readily-available facts, widely known for over 80 years! You can't convince them otherwise. So it is with Trumpist Devotees.

Time to ban TheSteve and permanently exile him to his Safe Space as he contributes nothing but pure hatred and venomous retort and attacks to anyone that doesn't drink his particular flavor of Hatoraide because we are all just a bunch of white privilege, anti-immigrant, enviro hating, coal burning Daffies?

Agreed @TheSteve. The disappointing part is that the Spies allow these posters and their posts to continue. They don't delete them nor do they expel posters who continue to spread their twisted view of peoples, cultures and other posters. All on the list have been warned before. Time to take action. This is a car site. Act like it.

@CanadianComments, you may wish to distance yourself from TheSteve. He is becoming increasingly unstable psychologically. Don't drink the Haterade (I thought "damn that was a good quip" when I saw it).

@CANADIANCOMMENTS: As I said before, the condition persists because it resonates with at least a significant portion of the AutoSpies staff.

Remember: A racist does not think himself a racist. He only thinks himself right. And he will very likely be offended when others call him a racist! We see the same is true of people who resonate with Nazi values of dictatorship, authoritarian rule, white supremacy, hate, derision, etc.

For decent people everywhere, it's painful and difficult to fathom a president in any "Free World" nation calling American Nazis "Fine People." Meanwhile, Trump Devotees here are deeply and profoundly offended by me repeating this fact, and pointing out their obvious resonance with Nazi ideology.
