IMPRESSED or DEPRESSED? Is THIS Footage Of The Next-Gen BMW 3-Series Getting You AMPED Up?
Although the competition is as strong as ever, the BMW 3-Series may not have to worry about the likes of the Audi S4 and Mercedes-AMG C43. That's because buyers are opting for sport-utility vehicles over sedans.

That said, there's still some diehards out there that appreciate a sport sedan. And that means many will turn to what was formerly the ultimate driving machine. Now it's just "one of many driving machines."

Nabbed testing around the Nürburgring is the next-gen BMW 3-Series. To be more specific, it is the M340i variant, according to the videographer.

Seen and heard working its way around the 'Ring, the BMW is yet another evolution of the 3'er. Though its skin is expected to receive a minor nip/tuck, its chassis is expected to get a significant overhaul. With a rumored 370-380 horsepower, it sounds mighty enticing. And its six-cylinder soundtrack is obvious in this clip.

So, what say you, Spies? Does this all-new footage of the next-gen 3-Series leave you IMPRESSED or DEPRESSED?

During the Industry Pool at the Nürburgring I have filmed the 2019 BMW M340i, G20 generation.

BMW is almost ready to introduce the G20 incarnation of the 3 Series and we're here to talk about the model that will serve as the range-topper until the new M3 arrives. We're referring to the 2019 M340i.

The M Performance machine is expected to be animated by a single-turbo (twin-scroll) 3.0-liter straight-six delivering around 370 ponies. Nevertheless, this is an excellent opportunity to remind you that oil burning fans will also have their needs catered to. Diesel fans will receive the M340d, which should allow the driver to play with at least 320 horses...

Well it looks evolutionary not revolutionary. Seems they have pushed the greenhouse further back. Giant rear brakes... 370hp, amazing how the hp wars just keep on moving ahead, should be a nice car. Even more important than the exterior design on new BMWs is the interior design. They have really played out the current theme and need new thinking and direction with their interiors. Lets see how it ends up.

Same old same old. What did you expect?

For those people who easily fit in it - the Bmw is a nice small sports sedan - suitable for two people with legs up front - and children on those without legs in the rear. It handles well - likely will have competitive numbers - and power - but the problem is - IT IS NO LONGER SPECIAL.

THere was a time when the 3 Series was the class performance and handling leader and everyone wanted one. Today - the difference between competitors is often HUNDRETHS of a second - and BMWs poor quality makes it a 3 year lease car. Their interiors come apart - they still have water pump issues - and they simply are no longer the "ULTIMATE DRIVING MACHINE"

I look forward to the next generation Cadillac competitor - especially the V-series. I believe that they will be quite a leap forward.

The German car manufacturers should hire back the designers they let go to Korean firms who have brought to market interesting new designs when given the freedom to do so.

The Koreans have simply closed the gap in record time on a variety of fronts. Dynamically, the Stinger, G80, and G90 are not inferior to the numbsville of BMW and Audi. Stylistically, the G80 and G90 make no missteps and the Stinger--in person--has the same wow factor as the first Audi A7 did. But where the Koreans win easily is on reliability because to Europeans, reliability isn't a quality parameter.

This 3 Series will be soft to dead for sales and BMW will not blame a mediocre design, but will blame the crossover craze and respond by giving us an X1.5, X2.5, X3.5, and so on.

BS. Japanese still has way better quality, and German still has way better handling, which is why Korean car is still priced so cheap. Isn't it?

Kudos to Korean's ambition, but you don't win by playing nasty like in the World Cup.

Unimpressive. It looks exactly like the current car, so why bother with the camo? It didn't look especially agile in the video, so the Camryification may have become more complete with this generation. Why does anyone want a new car that looks 10 years old?

Moving the game ON! Will definitely trump the lukewarm A4 Audi and the plasticky Mercedes C

Just look at the current 5-series, the 3-series will just look smaller. New 5-series is nicer, but nothing stand out. Sad but I have the say the thing that I liked the most about the new 5 is their ambience lighting options, the strips that run across the vehicle that is currently on the X5. Even their LCD screen looks small and cheap compared to Lexus RX 12.5 in.

Have to agree with TomM. BMW, in particular the 3-Series, used to define what handling and steering feel should be. I looked at the 3 for my last purchase and you had check the options sheet for the M-handling package and an improved adaptive steering package to have a BMW feel to it. This should all be baked into the car from the outset. I thought with regulations and added weight of new cars were largely to blame, bit there are other new cars in the market that drive very well.

New? What's new about this? BMW design is stuck in committee and wont be back until 2050. There is not a single talented person in the top BMW management when they keep feeding the public more of the same and assume that the designs are good enough, since it is a BMW... BMW is lost.... will it ever be found.. The New 8 is rewarmed 6 series with a BIGGER price, the new 3, indistinguishable to the casual observer from the current, like the last... stuck in committee... BTW, they (Germans at BMW) don't recognize Korean cars as a threat, because they never leave Munich.

If the new 8 is any indication of where they are going with interior styling, then the new 3 will just be that much more mundane.

I'm with Germanut even before he posts. This new 3 desperately needs to drive like a good old Bimmer and it must look special in and out -especially inside- otherwise this is DOA. The bar is now higher than the current model and Merc will release the new C relatively soon.

Rear end seems well planted without a bit of snappiness... maybe 51% weight in the back for the new generation? Definitely hope that is the case with the new CLAR platform.

The Next-Gen BMW 3-Series Getting You AMPED Up?

The last dozen generations did not get me amped up.

GermanNutGermanNut - 6/28/2018 9:44:16 PM

Why would anyone get amped up about a vehicle that will have a cheap interior, look just like a smaller version of the current 5-Series and lack the dynamism it used to have a decade ago?

If BMW screws up the 3-series, and there is a high chance it will, it's all but guaranteed that BMW will fall to 3rd place in global sales behind Mercedes-Benz and Audi. This is extremely problematic considering BMW was the global sales leader for many years since 2009.

You can complain everything about Bimmer, and some of which I complain too, but the truth is it still drives better than MB and rebadged VW. Isn't it?
